Interesting offseason thus far.

Bengals -- Retain Gruden. I wasn't wild about the way the offense performed late in the season, but this is good for the development of Dalton.

Steelers -- Did not retain Arians. Ben is pissed off.

Ravens -- New reports say Cam might be back. Flacco will not be happy if true.

Browns -- On the verge of employing Brad Childress..... Should be the last step in the failed Pat Shurmer experiment. And he'll probably ruin whatever qb they select.

I thought Arians retired? Or was that just a nice spin on it?

Arians says he was forced out; Steelers said he retired. The steelers "higher ups" want to return to the smash-mouth style of offense they are "known" for, and get away from chucking the ball 50 times a game with Ben.

Ben is a really good QB, but I think most of us can agree that he's exponentially better when he only 'has' to throw the ball 25-30 times a game. His best play comes from his ability to stay on his feet, extend the play allowing his WR's to break away from coverage, and hit the big play. It's not exactly because he's the most accurate QB in the world. I wouldn't put him up there with Brees or Rodgers in terms of pure passing ability.

I think getting the OL back into shape, getting a good, hard-nosed RB to pound between the tackles, and getting Ben back into the 25-30 attempts a game area would be very good for their offense all around.

The Steelers can say they want to get back to the run and they can point the finger at Arians, but the real issue is that they have a miserable offensive line. Their best hope was to let Ben do what Ben does - Take broken plays and make them into highlight plays. They need to fix that O-line if they want to get back to the way they used to play. Back when they were the best in the league at running the ball, they also had the best interior offensive line in the league.

yea, Ben's ability to break tackles and elude defenders is probably affecting the OL stats somehow, so people that have their head in a book don't see it.

Absolutely agree about the OL.

They've been forced, a bit, by the fact that they've not re-invested in their OL because Ben's been so good at avoiding and extending plays, but I think their short-sightedness in this area has led to the long-term problem(s) of not being able to run the ball effectively AND Ben taking a beating, even when he's not exactly sacked.

Actually, their line is pretty good at run blocking, and they've had success in recent history as well running the ball. It's in pass protection where they've struggled and which has only been compounded by Ben's unwillingness to always get rid of the ball in a timely manner.

Agree about Pittsburgh O-line. They don't fix it, Ben's career could be shortened. He's tough, but not indestructible.
