With that said.... Clayton Kershaw is a clear favorite to win the Cy Young and MVP and absolutely SHOULD win BOTH...

However... Comparing him (this season and last season) does not come close to the numbers of 1999 and 2000 Pedro Martinez who pitched in the height of the steroid era.

(Since nothing I do copies correctly I will just put the link to Pedro's stats below)

Pedro Martinez Stats - ESPN

In 99 or 2000 can't remember which Pedro led the league in ERA with like a 1.something ERA and the next closest pitcher was Roger Clemens at a 3.something.

Again not taking ANYTHING away from Kershaw because this dude is a phenon and will go down as one of the greatest pitchers imo but right now his season can't touch those two years of Pedro

It was 2000. Pedro had a 1.74 era (era+ of 291) and Clemens was 2nd in the AL with a 3.70 era (era+ of 131).

Thanks for this.

I really have to admit I took Pedro for granted and never realized how truly good he was in those years.

If you ever want to look something up, start here (I'm sure you already know this, this is more for anybody that stops by that isn't aware of the site). I can (and sometimes do) spend hours at a time on Baseball Reference.

2000 American League Standard Pitching | Baseball-Reference.com

I tried said link earlier this morning but it did not work for me. I think it was just the computer I was on because I have never had a problem with this site before.

That version of Pedro is the best pitcher I've ever seen. It seemed like he was hitting double digit K's every game, just lights out. I've heard Orel Hershiser had a stretch in the late 80s that was unreal as well but that was a bit before my time.

Kershaw comes in at 39) 2014 & 47) 2013

And isn't it wild that 6 of the top ten were back to back years by the same pitchers...

Wow, some of those go back pretty far with The Big Train and Three Finger Brown. I'm not sure who Tim Keefe is, but I bet he has a pretty cool nickname.

Kershaw is amazing, but he and all NL pitchers face 7.5 MLB hitters in a lineup every night.

It's hard to compare AL and NL great SP seasons for me because the differences between the lineups is so fundamentally different.

Isnt ERA+ league specific, though? So it wouldn't matter if he were AL or NL.

If ERA+ is compared to the entire MLB, than, yes, I agree. ERA+ would be quite worthless in comparing pitchers across leagues.

Actually it would matter which league cause ERA+ adjusts for the parks they play in not the league

sidenote tim keefe was 23 when he put up those numbers but it is for only 12 games weird season he pitched 105 innings only gave up 10 runs but also gave up 17 unearned runs not exactly steller numbers

In all fairness, unearned runs were common back then (likely due to primitive gloves and not so great field conditions.

The league NL ERA in 1880 was 2.37, but the total team runs allowed per game was 4.69, so each team on average allowed over 2 unearned runs a game.

Also, every team in the league that year committed 300+ errors...in an 85 game season

Hershiser was 1988. Pretty sick year but I give the edge to Pedro.
