At what cost though - we cant pay our no 3 $20M+ when we have holes everywhere and lot of the plugs open to leave at the end of the season.

Not mention the fact he is not even close to the number three on this staff.

I am quite concerned by how this is going to play out.

No point in getting that shatty about it. The cost is a sunk cost, like Zito. Sometimes the guy making less money (Vogey) pitches better than the guys making a lot (Tim, Zito). If Tim gets back to a league #3, he'd be a #4 on this team which is all we need.

Be glad we only have Tim for 1 1/2 more years if he never recovers.

Also, we have holes everywhere? I don't see that many really...

I don't think it's that complicated actually. His velocity went from exceptional to average. That changes the entire calculus of how he has to pitch, of how he's pitched his whole life. Changes his focus, his confidence, his pitch selection, etc.

The mystery is why the velocity went away, but once you posit that, what's followed this year hasn't been that difficult to understand. He's struggling to learn to pitch a whole new way, in real games vs the best hitters in the world.

He had a 2.74 ERA In 217 IP last year with the same stuff he has this year so I think it's more complicated or at least differentally complicated than you think it is.

you guys need to start circlejerk repping yourselves. Out of all the major fan bases here, you guys have the smallest rep.

And everyone on the Hoop knows that the one with the biggest rep = biggest peen :tsk:

lol, nice.

That's probably my fault li0. I'm not a huge fan of the "rep" system on here. I only rep posts that I feel deserve it. I wouldn't care one bit if they took away all of my rep. People that you respect should know whether or not if you're a good poster.

Hope all has been well. Looking pretty dim so far for our Sharks. Hopefully something good comes along soon.

For sure. At least when Zito does it you aren't surprised. It still doesn't feel like Tim's season is really happening. It's unfathomably awful.

When Zito does it we can have fun with it. With Timmy it's unspeakably sad.

That's a pretty good point. So he was sitting at 91-92 last year? I know he didn't have his 97-98 stuff but I recall it was more like 93-95 last year.

I recall him having much better control and fewer hanging off speed pitches.

Is there any way to chart whether or not my memory is correct?

Not really. Takes knowing where he was aiming. I did look at the movement on his slider, and found it was much straighter this year than in previous years.....but I wouldn't draw any conclusions from that, yet.

I think if you replace "fastball command," for "velocity" then your points stand.

Craw had three hits. Now at .241/.289/.335 - almost all-star worthy.

Also a good point. Still, what's easier to lose, and to get back? Velocity or FB command? I can't think of a ++ velocity guy losing it and then getting back. But can someone lose FB command and get it back? Happen often?

Realistically timmy needs to get back 1.5mph - I think that's doable with long-toss and/or mechanical adjustments. That's not uncommon if there is no underlying injury. Barry Zito got back 1.5mph in 2009 from his previous two years. And, of course, Verlander got back 2+mph from a couple of his down years.

As far as fastball command? Timmy does not make it easy on himself with these drastic weight changes he's made over the last couple of years.

Weird game start times didn't help. I caught the tail end of the game after the "threat of rain" delay. By that that time it was all :lm:

I think it was normally topping out around 93 but he humped it up to 95 on occasion. So not very different than this year where he's usually 91-93.

I think gp is right its more about location and control. There seems to be a mental aspect as well of course.

I have wondered if somehow he's tipping his pitches because I just can't fathom so many years of greatness followed by this without some nefarious reason. But you'd think they'd have figured that out if that's the case.

I've watched for that since his start in AZ last month, where he was almost assuredly tipping his pitches, and it looks like the hitters don't know what is coming for the most part, i.e. you can see them being set up for particular pitches/locations and then biting on it. In AZ, the hitters were spitting on everything offspeed, and then unwinding on fastballs in the zone (no matter the count).
