for a question like this, i start at the player chosen the highest spot? not sure if he's the highest 'bust' oick off hand, but Stokes was first to my mind?

didn't we also trade up for him?

took this from a series of articles on top 10 49er draft busts. this writer felt Stokes was No. 2 and can't argue. but posting this cause we long forgot what we gave up for Stokes.

also note, forgotten we had even traded up Jerry Rice?

In 1995, the San Francisco 49ers had the 30th that year but decided to move up to the 10th pick to select UCLA wide receiver J.J. Stokes. The 49ers dealt away their first round pick (No. 30), along with their third (No. 94), one of two fourths (119), and their 1996 first round pick. When the 49ers made the move they compared it to the draft-day trade ten years prior that netted them Jerry Rice. In that deal they gave up their first, second, and third round picks to move up. However, when 49ers fans look at the Stokes deal, it's that future number one that stings. If I recall correctly, that pick ended up becoming Ray Lewis. I realize the pick might have been different for the 49ers in 1996, but it's still worth noting.

Drunkenmiller.

Young was 35 not 38. If you are gonna throw away a 1st for the future when the team needs in the present you need to hit. He had 50 passes and was gone.

How the fuck is Alex Smih not even on this list? I might be able to understand how you'd think he wasn't the TOP overall bust, but seriously, not even top 8? Get real.

OTHER: Alex Smith.

Yes we did trade up for Stokes so it makes it worse, but I wouldn't say worse then Jim Drunkenmiller. JJ Stokes was at least somewhat productive where Drunkenmiller went on to be 3rd string QB on an XFL team.

I put Taylor Mays on the list because pretty much everyone knew he couldn't cover and had poor instincts coming out of college yet we took him because of his 40 and reputation as a big hitter for our puch him in the mouf strategy.

I'd have to imagine that thin line is the reason, but, I think we should make an exception. Alex Smith has to be on the list, and should be considered the biggest. I don't really care about how bad the environment was for him, with the coaching changes and not much help in the WR department. I don't care about any of the reasons why he failed, the bottom line is that he did.

As the #1 overall pick, along with being part of the problem as to why the 49ers didn't get to the playoffs his entire time here.. he deserves to be considered the 49ers biggest draft bust. The key part being, he was part of the problem.

We also traded up for Anthony Davis. We are gonna look back on that disaster of a first round and want to puke for years and years. Book it.

Hell, a lot of us even said that that was the worst case scenario. It sucks that guys on this board have been more accurate about draft picks then the FO.

I can't see Anthony Davis as a bust yet. Although the fact that he has false starts at Candlestick, is definitely making him closer to a Kwame type of bust... than anything resembling a good draft pick.

I know JJ stokes was a bust but atleast we got some production from him. I cant see him in the same group with some of these other guys.

Some of them we got absolutely nothing out of.
