Some hope for us?

Ray Shero's fingerprints are seen all over the 2017 Stanley Cup Final

Players he drafted or signed making an impact now include Jake Guentzel, Matt Murray, Conor Sheary, Olli Maatta, Bryan Rust, Scott Wilson and Tom Kuhnhackl.

With 11 picks in the 2017 draft - and, of course, the first-overall selection - the team has assets in place to move forward.

That doesn't necessarily mean the Devils will win a Stanley Cup immediately. But looking at Shero's proven track record, there's plenty of reason to be confident he can build a contender.

i am 100000000000000000000000% thrilled hes the gm and even more so that cranston is the scouting department. my one knock on lou for all those years is that he had unchecked control over everything and no one dared ask differently. it just breeds contempt and it really showed after the 03 draft imo. sure some nice pieces here and there but conte should've been out a long time ago and lou honestly should've been out a long time ago too probably during one of those early round KO's we would go through from like 06-10. those were really solid teams that constantly finished first in the division and got knocked out in the first round.

Take this for what it's worth.

Emptying the 2017 NHL Combine Notebook

After talking with several people at the Combine, the overwhelming sense I got is that the leader in the clubhouse is Patrick and it’s not close. In fact, not one person I spoke to thought otherwise.

Can't dismiss the value of leadership. Nolan has that per accounts.

For a draft that isn't considered strong, deciding who to draft #1 is a pain!

can't tell me patrick (on left) doesn't look like hes ready for the nhl game 1

just has that look that when he fills out by age like 23-24 he can be a tank

I have not changed my mind and still prefer Nico, but I trust Shero and scouting dept will make the right decision.

There is more of an "if" factor with Nico, but the reward could be a lot greater.

I am ready for this draft.

Nico excites me more. In terms of highest ceiling, sounds like he's a winner.

Nolan, not as exotic but definitely a winner but a good sense of a leader in him. Can't undersell that all. Plus didn't realize he has a very good shot that goes unnoticed when discussing the two.

then there's the risks..... Is Nico a flash in the pan? Is Nolan truly injury prone?

You can still sell me on either TBH.

For discussion purposes, I go Nolan....

*right to change mind*

I said it before, Nolan Patrick. But as discussed, I won't lose sleep if it's Nico. This could be a Hall/Seguin situation where they're both really good.

Nolan. Nico. What if neither one of them is the best player available?

i'm with patrick only because this team really really needs that true #1 center. if both these guys were "centers" but probably would end up as wingers then i would go with nico.

who would you rather have had seguin or hall?

A good center will always make his wingers score goals. we have one in hall so i say get him the best help.

also i dont think the difference is that great just really what team needs are

But if you look at Hall's career his numbers dont change a hell of a lot no matter what forward he plays with

One thing to keep in mind, not that it necessarily means anything is Nolan Patrick hasNHL bloodlines. His dad played 6 seasons, his uncle played 21. So you would assume, at least physically, he has the attributes to make it work.
