2015 football season thread

To me it's more due to the fact that as of a week ago the staff had no idea who they were going to pick. That tells me they are all pretty much even right now in terms of positives and negatives. We all agree that Browning probably has the higher ceiling and fits what this staff wants to run in terms of play calling far more than the other two.

If those assumptions are correct then you go with the older guys in game one given you have roughly the same chance of winning that game and put Browning out in game 2 and see how he responds. It gives you time to see how well he's adapting.

We'll just have to see what happens I suppose. I don't think they had no idea who they were going to pick a week ago though. They at least had a good idea. I just have to believe that if they go with the true freshman who's supposed to be the future of the program, it's because he's really the best option.

If there's no clear winner of the group, I agree with you, it should be Lindquist with Browning getting reps along the way (when it makes sense to get reps). I'll be a little frustrated if we see Lindquist against Boise, and then Browning start the next week, and so on. Obviously a guy could beat out the other guy for a starting spot mid season, but they need to have their shit figured out and have some consistency at the position. "Rebuilding year" or not, they need to have their shit figured out... There's 3 options, one of them is the best option, the coaches are paid good money to be able to figure out who that is without having to wait until everyone gets to start a game to figure it out.

I was just thinking that. I have to get some stuff done though because I'm taking Tuesday off. Should have thought that one through and taken tomorrow off instead...

Didn't get a whole lot of press, but still a big bummer. Right on the opening kickoff. Our DBs corps looked pretty good going into spring ball, now it's getting very thin out there.

Washington freshman cornerback Austin Joyner will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury, UW coach Chris Petersen announced Monday.

Joyner, The Seattle Times state player of the year last year out of Marysville-Pilchuck High School, was injured on the opening kickoff of the Huskies’ 49-0 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday. He will be eligible for a redshirt season, Petersen said.

Our Pac opener gets time and network.

I think it was a good idea to run with the frosh at QB he's showing growth every week.

I hope this shoulder injury isn't to bad with Browning, they need him next week against Stanford...

My thoughts on the game last night -

When did Oregon stop running their turbo offense? They ran a total of 76 plays which is well down from their 100+ average for the last many years and it was obvious they weren't firing off plays with any kind of the same urgency.

The defense did well outside of that first drive where our corner fell asleep. I was worried about that oregon running game and it really was never as bad as I thought it might be. Makes you feel a little better knowing Stanford and Utah are looming and can both run the crap out of the ball.

Fans in the stadium were booing the targeting call on Clay, but it was obvious and blatant. You can't lower your helmet unless you are a running back (Just my shot at what is a badly constructed rule). We get it, hitting with your helmet not only can do damage to the person you are hitting, but has caused death. No long time Husky should ever forget Curtis Williams.

UW didn't get much of a pass rush most of the game and seemed content with not blitzing much. I know they didn't want to get burned with the big gashing plays downfield, but you can't leave a QB like Adams free for long periods of time in the pocket. Someone will always get open.

Once Victor hit the field it was a defense on another level. I don't know how many rushing yards they had in the second half, but Victor was there on every run it felt like. And Taj Griffin? LOLZ I think he finished with negative yards which tells us speed runs on the edge are not a problem for this defense at all. We owned that kid. They gave up a total of 138 yards to Freeman, but that's rather pedestrian for them.

The ducks fumbled twice and UW failed to get either one. They also had chances at several of Adams passes, although none right to any of our kids. He's a veteran QB that did a great job of protecting the ball.

Our offense is what we thought it was.

The positives first -
Run blocking is improving and they are still slowing growing at pass blocking.
Gaskin is now fully cemented as our tailback. He has good vision and explosive potential. That and no matter how the D tries to strip it, he's been solid at holding onto the ball.
Browning didn't make any catastrophic mistakes. He did get away with a couple of balls that most other defenses would have intercepted, but he made better decisions than he did against Cal for sure.
Perkins just might be the best TE we've had in years. I like him better than ASJ. At least in the passing game.

The negatives?
Can't have your tackles creating multiple false start penalties at home. Just no excuse, young or not.
Mickens with a drop on a key play right in his chest? Jesus dude, you are a senior.
Why is there no hurry up packages for that unit? Time matters and they squandered a ton of it on that second to last drive. Entirely inexcusable. What the hell are you doing Smith?
Browning is telegraphing his target badly. You can tell exactly who he's going to sometimes even before the snap and he's watching that person the whole time. On that note, he had a play late where he hit a guy near the sideline for a first down, but entirely missed a wide open receiver in the seam that would have been an easy TD. He had others of that ilk. Yes, he's a true frosh, but he's not looking over the field before making throws and someone needs to develop that. Badly.
Our receivers can't block worth a shit and yet we keep throwing screen plays out there. Worse, I saw quick throws to the boundary when there were two duck defenders over there and no other receiver to block. What the absolute fuck is that? Why is the QB throwing it, and why is the play caller calling it?

Petersen and his staff blew getting the kids out for a punt that cost them a TO, then blew getting a call in on that last TD drive that cost them another TO, and failed to get the team moving with any pace down 2 scores with under 8 mins to go. That shit can't fly. That's all on Petersen, Smith, and the ST coach.

offense is learning week in and week out, hell that douche bag Ed Cunningham even said it, a "true freshman at left tackle, going against a DE that could be easily a 1st or 2nd round pick.

Right now Gaskin and Browning are getting first rate education on the field, this OL gets through there grown pains this season, and you take Gaskin and Washington with a one two backfield and Browning , hell this offense could be very good next season...

I don't get how it was that Carta-Samuels gave us the best chance on that last drive over Lindquist. I don't care if Lindquist can't throw 20 yards down the field (I have no idea if Lindquist has a weak arm, or not... we have never seen him throw the ball, that I remember), he at least has the maturity and experience to have a chance there. It was completely obvious from the instant K.J. stepped on the field for that last drive that the moment was WAY too big for him.

Petersen was asked about that. KJ is the backup and has been named that for some time. As such, he's taken all of the reps for it. He wouldn't be the backup of Lindquist was the better QB.

We have seen Lindquist throw and it was ugly. Not quite Cyler Miles kind of ugly, but close. He went 10/26 for 162 yards and 1 TD against a terrible Hawaii defense. Since that game every time he has been in he has either handed the ball off or kept it and ran it himself. He hasn't thrown a live ball in 15 months.

It was really just super bad luck to have to throw KJ into such a fire for his first action. I think all of us knew it was over as soon as we saw him. Hell, I didn't give us more than a 10% chance even with Browning in that situation.

They were showing the trainers working on Browning's arm throughout the last *ucks drive. I just assumed they would throw Lindquist out there (even though I did know KJ was the backup) because he was more likely to have the composure to actually do something.

While they never have him throw, Lindquist is on the field quite a bit every game and seems a better option in that scenario, to me. C'est la vie, I guess.

My seats are on the other side of the field. I can't see what is happening on the UW sideline so it was a pure shock to all of us when they said KJ was out there.

Not having Azeem Victor in the first half and having Dwayne Washington go out in warm ups were the real killers of that game. I'm sure there were quite a few plays not available from the game plan after DW went down and UW actually outplayed the ducks in the second half after Victor was back.

The uncharacteristic penalties were also a killer. Felt a lot like the first year or two under Sark to be honest, but young kids and all.

I'm expecting Stanford to win, but I do think if Browning and Washington can play it will be closer than some might expect. We have played them tough for several years now and I think our run D will be up for the task. Not as sure about our pass rush which also was a huge problem against Oregon. Can't leave veteran QB's in the pocket for over 5 seconds and not expect them to find someone to throw to.
