Wolff is a 26 year old converted reliever. Throws hard. Seems to be a theme for the Giants lately.

Israel Cruz.... I got nothin, but I'll bet he's a hard thrower. Hasn't pitched above rookie ball, 21 years old.

But...

Further evidence that the Giants are punting the international market.

Eh, not necessarily. They're limited to $300K per signing the rest of this period and have used about half before the trade. At this point, unlikely to sign anyone else anyway. I was actually waiting for them to trade this.

I feel like this hasn't been talked about enough.

How do you guys feel about the Evan Longoria rumor? He basically has a 5 year, $80M deal left, with a 6th year option at $13M. Also has 10-5 rights.

He just turned 32 years old. Defense is still very good at 3rd base. Last year was probably his worst offensive season though, but he's always been at least average and usually well above average.

I'd probably just rather see them go after Frazier at similar cash for less years, but with limited options coming up through the pipeline at 3rd base, he could be a solid long term option.

But why? He would be a name for fans to see, but the Giants already have that. He won’t help the team win anything serious, so would pass.

But I do see him having value.

My thoughts as well, until I thought about who the Giants will have at 3rd base the next 5 years..... I don't think it's going to be anyone in the organization that locks it down.

It could be Arroyo, but I'm assuming he's going to get moved to 2nd and Panik will be traded before he gets expensive (still perhaps this offseason).

Ryder Jones perhaps, but I still see him more as a back up -- Gillaspie type of player.

Sandoval is obviously hanging by a thread and not the answer.

Down the line, Jacob Gonzalez perhaps but he's years away AND probably a 1st baseman long term.

Giants just don't have anything there. It would make more sense to get a younger 3rd baseman, but I think Longo could perhaps be solid and useful if the Giants turn it around over the life of his deal, and he probably wouldn't cost much in terms of prospects.

But, as you already stated, he has a relatively team friendly contract, so he would be expensive, prospect-wise. He also has full no-trade protection. Why would he want to come to a rebuild situation?

I would be OK with Frazier. But Longoria doesn’t make sense.

The 10-5 protection might be a problem, and I have no idea if he would want to come here. He's a California kid, but California is a big state.

The contract is relatively team-friendly, but for the Rays it's not necessarily the case. Giants could eat it all and be okay.

I agree it's not a good fit. BUT, if it was in the cards I don't think it would be a bad move. The two can be mutually exclusive in this case I think.

Essentially, this was a get rid of money move. Wolff is expected to miss most of 2017 with a shoulder injury. Maybe Cruz is a diamond in the rough but hasn't shown anything stateside. He is young, so maybe he becomes something of a prospect. I guess the Giants thought that it would be better to get all of Moore's money off the books than eat the opt out money at the end of the season (as to why they exercised his contract). In light of this trade, I see no other reason why the Giants decided to exercise his option (unless they had buyer's remorse after the opt in).

It did keep options on the table. This frees money, which, gun to my head, makes me think a big-ish add is coming soon.

Yeah I think they confidently picked up his option knowing they'd be able to trade him should they have to.

Building on what Cal said, I think an addition is imminent. Or at the very least they realized they needed a bit more money to play with because the guy they wanted got too expensive, or the guy the wanted got cheaper and they can get two guys now.

We'll see exactly what happens next but this is a pure salary dump and likely not a signal of a tear down. Wouldn't be surprised to see Span next if they need to. Pence will be extremely tough to trade with 10-5 rights.

It also frees a 40-Man spot for Hundley.

It looks like the Giants are interested but the trade may never happen.

Using only players currently in the system, this is how the 25 looks...

Bumgarner
Cueto
Samardzija
Stratton
Gregorio

Melancon
Dyson
Smith
Law
Blach
Fernandez
Strickland
Gearin

Posey
Hundley

Belt
Panik
Crawford
Sandoval
Tomlinson

Span
Duggar
Pence
Parker
Williamson

This leaves a lot of players off, so there will likely still be trades. Gorkys, Crick, Beede, Arroyo and Slater all SHOULD be on an opening day roster. Gorkys is the only one who will need to be traded (or room made for him) of this list, though. And Duggar is not on the 40, so room will need to be made for him.

I would agree that the 25 shakes out this way except that I think, if the Giants don't pick up a center fielder (and I think they will, even if only a one year guy), they go with Gorkys in center and leave Duggar at AAA, unless Gorkys bombs spring and Duggar absolutely lights it up.
Also, I just don't see Julian Fernandez breaking camp with the big league club. If the Giants see themselves a contender, they aren't going to waste a bullpen spot on someone that green.
Parker and/or Williamson could be dfa'd if their spring is poor. That gives room for Slater and possibly Arroyo. Beede waits in the wings but could make it out of spring if Gregorio looks poor and the Giants try to pass him through waivers.

With the Hundley deal, the Giants have about 9.2 million left to spend and stay under the luxury tax threshold.

Fernandez seems to have enough upside that I think the Giants will doo what the can to keep him. That may even include shipping someone to the Rox just so they can put him in the minors. Gregorio? McParker?

I think it depends upon his spring training performance as to whether he sticks to the roster. If the Giants could swing a trade to keep him on the farm, that would be great!
