Rumors circulating that connect the Mariners to John Jay. I wouldn't hate the idea although I don't think he provides as much value as a healthy Dyson. However Dyson is what 34 so having him healthy may not be realistic. Regardless though Jay shouldn't cost a ton and he's better offensively but worse in the field.

Going cheap at 1B and potentially in the OF means they best spend on pitching then.

I read that while waiting in the doctors office and about had to get some meds for the uncontrollable laughter. Good move for a well rostered team, but for us? I agree if they spend big on pitching then this is livable, but since when have the M's spent little early just to spend big later? Try never.

My wish list:

1 - Lynn or Cobb and Chatwood with one of those two.
2- Cain
3- Eduardo Nunez
4- 2 Stud RP setup men (2 of Minor, Kintzler, Reed, Shaw, Swarzak, and McGee)
5- Otani* - He I consider a bonus regardless of who they sign so he could be numbered 1-5 in my book.

Baseball America's Bob Dutton reports that Kyle Lewis is still dealing with lingering issues in his right knee.

Lewis was forced to leave the AFL at the end of October because of soreness in his knee, and while there wasn't any structural damage, it sounds like this could be a chronic issue. The 2016 first-round pick has more talent than any prospect in the Seattle system, but the question is now if he'll ever be able to truly recover from the horrific ACL tear that has seen him miss all but 49 games in his two years as a professional. There's just as much risk in Lewis's profile as there is reward at this point.

Not a good sign. I hope he can get healthy eventually but not looking good.

Maybe he and Haniger can platoon and get one full season out of them?

Happy thanksgiving everyone.

Seems as if the Jon Jay thing is pretty serious. I'm unsure how I feel about it. He has a good BA and OBP, but literally offers absolutely nothing other than that. Zero power, not a threat on the base paths and grades as below average defensively the past two years. I'd rather have Dyson, personally.

The Ohtani thing is good news. Seems the Mariners are all in on landing him.

This is also good news in the fact that even if we don't land him, JD does seem to realize that the Mariners need another top tier starting pitcher.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I would rather have Dyson too. I think he has more overall value than Jay. That said I would be comfortable with either option as I think they both fill the hole appropriately.

What Dipoto has said regarding Ohtani is encouraging. I think you are correct Dipoto seems to be trying to allot money for starting pitching which is good news. It also seems the interest in Kuma has motives linked to enticing Ohtani.

Being the Mariners pessimist, I view this as meaning we will take a potential superstar if we can get him dirt cheap. They will never find a talent like his for $3M a year. I hope they finally prove me wrong on this.

Isn't there the possibility that he is offered an extension immediately after he accepts the offer? I sort of wonder if it is a tongue in cheek thing that would be the case.

This is how it usually goes for Seattle it seems. That is why I am not confident we land Ohtani. If we don't get him we need to get Lynn or Cobb. I am a big fan of landing either of these guys. I would have some interest in a few other guys as quality back end starters too, guys like Cashner, Jhoulys Chacin or Jaime Garcia. It all depends if the Mariners have confidence in Miranda, Moore and Erasmo. Erasmo was easily the better pitcher of the 3.

I say both even with him. I am not sure if all fans know, but from what I read Ohtani only pitched once a week usually on Sunday's. He isn't use to a 5 man rotation so M's might have to carry a 6th starter which is fine with me if we get strong starters.

Paxton
Leake
Lynn
Cobb
Felix/Ohtani rotation.

Ramirez bullpen/extra starter when Paxton goes down.

JD said he wanted to get to a staff by committee so here you go.

Not unless you want to take a gamble and then get hit like the Braves did for cheating the system. I think there is an understanding with him and all teams that the second contract will be his big contract.

Didn't know he was only pitching once every 7. Is that kind of thing common in Japan? No matter who Ohtani ends up playing for its going to be an interesting experiment.

Not sure if that is common, but tend to thank so. They said it on MLB Network the other day. Maybe that is why they have less injuries...until they come to Seattle.

Interesting, I did not know that, never really thought about it either. I know they play less games over roughly the same time period so I guess it makes sense.

I ran across this today:

Japan Professional Baseball

Since 1950, Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) has been the highest level of baseball in Japan. In terms of structure and schedule, NPB shares many similarities with Major League Baseball. Composed of 12 teams divided into two circuits, NPB seasons consist of 144 games that begin in late March or early April, and end in October with playoff baseball.

As with MLB, the midpoint of the Japanese baseball season is marked by All-Star festivities and ceremonies, including a multi game All-Star Series. Schedules also feature a period of interleague play between teams of the Pacific League, which employs a designated hitter and features faster-paced games, and the Central League, which offers a more traditional style of baseball and could be likened to the National League of MLB. At the end of the regular season, six teams participate in the Japanese playoff system known as the “Climax Series”.

During this tournament, the three top teams from both the Pacific League and Central League compete in three stages of playoffs. At the end of the Climax Series, the two winners from each league meet in the best-of-seven championship known as the Japan Series. This playoff system has been in use since the formation of NPB in 1950, though Japanese professional baseball dates all the way back to 1934.

Though gameplay in the NPB may differ from MLB in various ways, such as six-man pitching rotations, tie ballgames, and enforced time limits, the passion for baseball is as strong in Japan as anywhere in the world.
