A rare case ,don't you think? At least for the 9ers.

Tom Brady, Adrian Peterson, Phillip Rivers, Darelle Revis, Joe Thomas, Jamal Charles, Jeremy Maclin, Reggie Wayne, Thomas Davis, Von Miller, Rob Gronkowski, Geno Atkins, Tyrann Mathieu, Marshall Yanda, Eric Berry, Chris Harris......all of these guys returned to form.

Thought this was about drafting players with injuries.

It is. My point is based on this comment:

"Problem is, these ACL guys don't return to the players they once were."

ACL guys come back in this day and age, all the time....it doesn't matter if they are college or NFL guys.

Yet you never posted one case for the 9ers.

So what? The ACL isn't the reason the players were not successful in the NFL - save Lattimore. It's basically because most guys who come from college to the NFL don't make it far in the league, period. However...if you want a 49er mentioned....sure:

Frank Gore. Both ACL's.

There are tons of guys who return to form after an ACL injury. Frank Gore tore both ACL's, and I think he did alright for SF.

Tons?!

Joe Looney, Tank Carradine, Marcus Lattimore, Brandon Thomas, DeAndre Smelter, and whoever else i might've missed. i'm leaving Redmond off this list. We got nothing out of these guys so the ODDS say this is a bad idea. If you want cite Frank Gore fine, but also note i don't think Gore was drafted thinking he'd sit out a year? I may be wrong on Gore but i don't think he sat out year 1?

Again, if you and Patterson are agreeing with Baalke on ACL picks, no problem. If you guys feel we should continue spending 2nd round and higher picks on ACL guys, ok. But you guys are being teased in the same manner as Baalke was.

We don't have to project or say "we'll see?", we have CLEAR evidence on OUR team, Baalke got us nothing out of these guys.

Baalke got nothing from most of the players he drafted. Most of ACLs were non issues. Baalke was just a poor judge of talent. That is the real issue

I was gonna respond in full, but this will do:

Thank you.

Yes, this is the same thinking by Baalke, and what were the results? Doesn't matter what round, the theory is the same....sacrifice one year and then we'll get great value from then on. Problem is, these ACL guys don't return to the players they once were. The guys Baalke drafted were all talented guys, but the ACL keeps them from returning to form.

Jaylon Smith is great value ASSUMING he returns to what he was at Notre Dame. That is still to be decided. Was his an ACL injury? What about the LB from UCLA, ACL too?

I actually didn't say they would need to sacrifice a year and the issue with Baalke is he did it far too often like two or more each draft. So like I said I don't have a problem with drafting a guy that has injury concerns or someone coming off an injury but the value has to be right.

This is fact, Baalke was a terrible GM he could hardly draft a good healthy player let alone a good injured one.

Never too early: 49ers go QB in mock 2018 NFL draft

Yes, way too early but basics remain regardless of who plays well this season. The "basics" mean we still need to draft the key positions.

1. Drafting a QB is almost always the first consideration, granted we might get Cousins or other high priced FA first.
2. If no QB prospect, next is LEO.
3. From here opinions start to vary, and BPA still factors in highly. But "all else being equal", my opinion is if no LEO, next is LT.

LOL, yea they titled that one right. So much could change till 2018. Even with the QBs, college QBs that are considered top prospects now might not be by the time the next draft rolls around. Not sure the 49ers will draft for the Leo position. They are evaluating several people currently on the team and if one of them works out then I suspect that will not be a priority in the draft

i dunno, evaluating is ok but realistically none of these guys are long term solutions. Armstead isn't a LEO but it makes sense to TRY him now, for run stopping. Dumervil is clearly not a long term solution. Are we thinking a 6th round pick might fill that role......maybe but the odds are long.

IF we have an opportunity to draft an every down LEO, we draft him. This as opposed to filling LEO 'by committee'

We will find out if any of these guys can fill the LEO. The LEO is primarily a pass rushing position, not a run stopper. Armstead showed a little promise pass rushing his rookie year, but struggled with run stopping. Just posted a pick that showed Armstead lost weight for the role.

yeah, that is why i said next draft we go LEO, after QB that is. But you seemed to disagree with LEO?

But for NOW, i understand we have no choice but try out different combinations, ie go by committee.

Not disagreeing or agreeing about Leo yet. Next year's draft is one year away. I want to see how this group performs first. If anyone out of the group stands out this year then I wouldn't want to use a high pick for that position. If no one takes the position this year, then it will be a priority. We have this season to figure things out.

Ok, but the odds of one of these current guys filling LEO, is slim at best. Filling LEO on a "long term" basis that is, not just for this coming season. So that is why for the 2018 draft, i posted draft LEO if no QB.

Dumervil may still have some gas left, but he isn't a long term solution. Dumervil might not even be effective THIS season? Pita Taumoepenu is a late 6th round pick.

Armstead rated pretty well as a pass rusher so he has a chance. Even if the odds are slim that someone out of the group makes it, we still have this season to figure this out before the next draft.

Yes, that is why it was a "way too early draft" article. :-)

Obviously, i hope this committee works for THIS season, but we shouldn't expect too much. Who knows, maybe we can't keep so many players forming this "committee"? We might end up with only Armstead and Dumervil?
