Let me put it this way. Shut down the Alabama or OU football program and see how literally everything else that it finds is affected.

Well do you thin the academics at OU would be different? I mean, my only experience is at Oklahoma State and I was elaborating on my time that I was there. My tuition went up every semester and there wasn't much renovation in the four years I lived there.

Without a doubt. Simple economics tells us so.

That's a good call, I too have never been to Alabama's campus but I would venture to say:

1) I'd bet the campus has seen some remarkable upgrades the past 10 years. Not only for football, but that benefited the student body.
2) Why should the professors get a bump in salary because the football coach has created a juggernaut program?
3) What if the extra 10's of millions of dollars have helped keep tuition from rising faster than it might otherwise rise? Also, I'm sure there are plenty of students who were attracted to attend Alabama simply because of the football program. That creates more revenue and would likely help keep the overall costs of school more level.
4) I GUARANTEE it has increased community revenue. Parking lots, restaurants, media, bars, etc. are likely to see a large increase of business when Alabama is fielding a top 25 team.

Again, I don't have any numbers to back all that up, just assuming...so maybe Saban and a national championship caliber team each fall doesn't bring in the big money like I thought. I'm just assuming it does, for all the money they are throwing at him.

I cant really fight your arguments, which are good ones. I also don't have any numbers but number 4 most likely is 100% accurate. I would add that college football in states like Alabama and Oklahoma are basically king in sports so I can actually see money that isnt available being thrown around for wins. lol

Just to put this into perspective. Name another country that could fill 100k seat stadium to watch college kids play a sport
Europe does that for soccer. And they play much more soccer matches than we do football games.

Isn't that considered professional soccer or are European colleges and universities selling out 100k stadiums for their soccer programs as well?

It's professional. I don't even know if Europe has competitive college sports.

We value sports more than education. Shoot we value reality TV more than education, we actually elected a reality TV star to the white house.

Meh, no different than electing a former Hollywood actor, IMO (Reagan)....

I agree completely that teachers deserve more, however your GF's grade school salary is not a viable comparison to a college coach. Your better alternative for that is a High School coach, where in most parts of the country that is just a teacher who takes on that responsibility for a very small bump in pay.

As far as raises for teachers go, that is not as difficult as people think, but usually when people hear about a raise to property tax where it is going to does not matter. In the area I live in they just changed to pay for teachers for out school district. Starting Salary is $40,000, and raises from there are based on education obtained. They also removed the salary cap that prevented more than a cost of living raise after 15 years. The first 4 years for this are paid through the rainy day fund that Utah government keeps around, after that there is a raise to the property tax, but I have not heard anyone around here complain about it.

End result though is all teachers in surrounding districts want to be over here. So if you half ass it there are highly thought of educators that will be happy to take your spot. Very little investment needed and the school district is set up to become the best in the area.

Not sure if anyone caught this but Max Kellerman, who I can't stand, did a short bit on Sabans contract and just coaching contracts in general. For once, I actually agree with him. My gf is a 5th year teacher in the joke of a state of Oklahoma and she makes 28k a year. The last I checked, I think Bob Stoops makes 7mil a year, I think, and if that's the case, he makes 250x more than my gf who is teaching our 3rd and 4th grade kids. She's no different than any other teacher that is busting their ass teaching our little shits who don't listen in class.

I went to Oklahoma State and in that time frame I racked up 30k in student loan debt and the per semester charges went up dramatically from my first day to my last. I guess what I'm asking is, is he right? Do we in society put entertainment over priorities like education?

I see them as totally unrelated things. Sports in today's world are big money makers, as are things like blockbuster movies and huge TV shows. The best in both fields make a ton of money but what you're also leaving out is there are probably thousands of HS coaches around the country making almost nothing, if not working entirely for free. We just need to pay teachers more, unrelated to football contracts.

Believe it or not, they actually tell teachers in Oklahoma that the average is 40k a year. What they're not telling them is that is if you have been teaching for 20 years.

That being said, I agree with you. I'm just pointing out that these coaches don't deserve this pay. Nobody is getting anything out of it. I've never been to the Alabama campus, I'm sure it's very nice. I wonder if the 4 national championships he brought to Tuscaloosa improved the campus, increased professor salaries, lowered tuition and increased community revenue. These are the only things that in my mind would be beneficial from wealth from sports.
Yikes, that's no bueno.

My wife is a special ed teacher and started around $42,000. Luckily she also pursued her masters in administration and is now a vice principal and making significantly more now.

This is a chart I found that discusses teacher pay for teachers in our area. It doesn't include all the time on weekends or after school that they do work, but also doesn't include the cost of benefits either. Here it is:

Teaching (at least in this area) isn't a bad gig. Especially if you get 30 years in. I have a friend who's wife graduated at 21, and started working in the system the next fall. She can have a fully funded retirement at 51 years old, if she continues for 30 years.

I could be wrong but arent tax payers also paying college coaches?

Not at all. Like some posters have mentioned, major schools like Bama do not use tax payer money to pay their football coach. I know at Texas our entire athletic department is a self supporting auxiliary, meaning zero tax dollars are used/given to the athletic department. All money comes from private contributions, ticket sales, merchandise sales, etc. There are 5-7 boosters who pay Tom Herman's salary, FYI......

Okay so I was not aware that tax payers for most major programs do not pay coaching salaries. I would be curious to know how the profit margins are allocated throughout the departments of the Universities.

Football pays for all the sports nobody cares about ... like gymnastics, volleyball, etc...
