Uncle Phil will keep them relevant. But if Washington and USC keep playing like they have, they won't be any better than the 3rd best team in the PAC.

Oregon definitely had their best chance during the Chip era. Missing out on hiring Peterson was another misstep. It's certainly possible they could make a comeback but it's going to take a coach who can not only recruit with the blue bloods, but can turn 3 stars into 5.

Did they have a realistic shot at Petersen? Just about everyone, USC included, came calling on Petersen and he turned everyone down until the Huskies were able to convince him to leave Boise.

That was the thing with Chip, he never really landed much in the way of 4 and 5 star guys. Oregon was typically middle of the road in recruiting during Chip's era. What he was very good at was finding 2 and 3 star guys who fit his system and played like 4 and 5 star guys in it.

I think that's where Helfrich failed. He wasn't nearly as good at finding those 2 and 3 star guys that fit perfectly into what Oregon does. So he ended up with 2 and 3 star guys that played like 2 and 3 star guys.

Let's wait for USC to win the PAC before declaring them "Back".

Yeah like beating both the PAC champ and the Bg10 champ in the Rose bowl n finishing 3rd in the country isn't good enough . Wouldn't that be peak of your run type of finish for the Ducks?

I agree. A 9 game winning streak, winning the Rose Bowl and finishing ranked #3 in the nation were a nice way to end the season, especially considering that we started the season getting curbstomped by Bama, were 1-3 after 4 games and folks were calling for Helton's head.

But we need to win the PAC and get into the playoffs before I'm willing to say that we're truly back.

Ranked and in contention for a NC are 2 different things.

I never said they were. Kansas State, Texas A&M and West Virginia runs were much shorter than Virginia Tech's was. VT was probably a Top 10 for nearly 20 years.

K-State's run lasted for 10 years from 1993 to 2003.
West Virginia's run under Rodriguez was just a couple of years.
Texas A&M's run under Slocum lasted ten years from 1989 to 1999.
Baylor's run under Briles was just a couple of years.

Other than not winning it all, I just don't think VT under Beamer has much in common with Oregon's recent run.

Also, my main objection is because I don't think VT is just going to cease to be relevant like the other schools. I think Beamer just lost his touch at the end of his career, but it looks like their new coach has them on the upswing again.

Don't know about the dust bin but they'll be just about like the majority of schools in the FBS. Middling with an occasional burst upward. Let's face it, there are really only a handful of teams from each Power 5 conference that can stay "in the hunt" on a regular basis. The rest can catch lightening in a bottle occasionally, but they just can't sustain it. JMO

List more teams that almost made it but didn't. mmmmmk

The University of Houston Cougars and Bill Yeoman.

Upon entering the Southwest Conference, the Cougars won the conference three times in their first four years and had a pair of Cotton Bowl wins.

In 1979, the Cougars went 11-1 and beat Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl and finished 5th in the AP and Coaches Poll.

In 1986, the Cougars were 1-10 and Yeoman was forced to retire amid allegations of recruiting violations.

Texas A&M's run under Slocum lasted ten years from 1989 to 1999.
The thing with Slocum was he couldn't keep all his assistants around cause they all ended up coaching elsewhere cause they got paid more and then he tried to the get the AD at the time to upgrade the facilities so he could compete with Texas and Oklahoma but either AD and Board of Regents didn't have the money at the time or what.

I don't know what any of these words mean when put in that particular order, I just know this has something to do with college sports, so my answer will be San Jose State Spartans! Woohoo! Check us out on the WAC boards! Amirite, @Used 2 B Hu?

They have had a nice little run.
Even got to the NC game en sech.
Fun to watch for a while.

But I think they join these teams in the Ash Heap of College Football History that got close but no cigar:
  • Kansas State of the 90's
  • Virginia Tech played in the NC once.
  • A&M under Slocum
  • Baylor most recently
  • West Virginia with Rich Rod was 1 game away from greatness.
I loved watching all those teams while they were making a run except Baylor of course.
I know I'm forgetting some teams that were close then faded into oblivion.

List more teams that almost made it but didn't. mmmmmk

It's tough to say. Oregon has excellent facilities second to none thanks to Uncle Phil and Taggert killed it in recruiting this weekend during Oregon's spring game. Only time will tell ... like 3 or 4 years down the road from now.

The future of Pac-12 football: What do the next five years hold?

The Pac-12 is headed toward a crossroads. Can they stick with the pack in the conference, or are things bound to change?

Let’s make some predictions about the conference.

1. Washington will become the premier power in the North.
The Washington Huskies have stacked up their depth chart for years. They have the best coaching salaries outside of USC, Oregon and Stanford, so stability shouldn’t be an issue. They recruit in the top 25 regularly. They have a top-two coach in the conference in Chris Petersen. And based on the depth already stacked on the chart they have a defense that should be among the nation’s best for years.

If Washington can improve their offense to elite levels, they will be contending for national championships on a yearly basis.
