True, the Bills could have fired thier GM a month ago and still used his draft board.

The idea would have been to fire him the day after the season and allow his replacement to build his own draft board.

I feel bad for the Buffalo fan base. They are diehard sports fans but they are subjected to this ownership for the Bills AND the Sabres.

Can draft well and still be a terrible GM if you can't handle HC's and scheme fits. Whaley proves that.

So you can prep for the next draft. This was always a lame duck offseason. I'd wager the HC has more sway over this particular draft than he will the next few, not Whaley.
Well we know it won't be Whaley.
Maybe it's me, but I think the team should know by seasons end if they are going to fire the GM. Tge timing is odd at best. If nothing else, keep Whaley into the start of the 2017 season, then make the call to fire him.

I really don't understand all the hub bub with the Bears. They gave up a 3rd and a 4th to make sure they got their guy. None of you know for certain that there wasn't other teams lobbying to trade up to get him. They then recovered the 4th by trading down 9 spots in the second. So a 3rd, and a 3rd next year for what they believe is the future at QB? BFD. I sure wish they would've done the exact same thing in 2014 to ensure they got Aaron Donald, who went one spot ahead of them, and whom they were targeting, but sat on their hands in hopes he'd fall to em'.

Doesn't help that NFL fans aren't enamored with Trubisky as much as NFL scouts.

I thought it wasn't a bad trade for the Bears. I just didn't like it to get Trubisky.

I know nothing is guaranteed, but there could be at least 4 QBs in 2018 better than Trubisky.

I really hope the bears found a QB and I am no scout but I do have my doubts I hope "Mitchell " proves me wrong

Folks are acting like it's the second-coming of the Herschel Walker deal.

It's not.

You have to wait until after the draft if you are going to clean house because you need scouts in place to evaluate players all college season and help you select. This isn't unusual.

This.

The firing of Whaley, and the specific timing of it as well, were not at all a surprise to Bills fans. One not-so-subtle recent "hint" was at the Bills pre-draft press conference, when McDermott was the only one speaking to the media. I'm not sure if Whaley was even in the room.

At some point after McDermott was hired, the owners decided that Whaley was gone. But by the time they had decided to let him go, it was already too close to the draft to get an entire replacement staff in place. I'm guessing Whaley was told at least a month ago what was going on.
