Of the current cast, I like Bryant and Davidson, It is good to see a bigger woman actually telling good jokes with good timing rather than just being Melissa McCarthy (whom I cant stand). I can see Bryant becoming a pretty big name. Pharoh's impersonations are GREAT, but he is a piss-poor actor. Jones is funny, but I am not sure she has any staying power. Can she do more than the big, crazy black woman? She is also pretty old, isn't she? Like mid-late 40s? Kyle Mooney is OK, but I don't see him as a "star". McKinnin gets a lot of time, but I am not a fan of her's. Strong is very under-rated. I can see her having decent success post-SNL.

I think Taran Killam is the funniest on the show now. Cecily Strong is really good too. I didn't like McKinnon at first but she's growing on me. Beck Bennett has only stood out as the grown baby. that shit is hilarious. I agree about Jones, she has to come with more than the angry/scary black woman. And Kenan is just garbage. I can't believe he's been on so long. Can't wait until he's gone. Bayer, Bryant and Moynihan are pretty funny and Pharoah does some great voices. I know people love to talk about how great old casts are but they've always done a great job of replacing talent.

Killam is alright. I think he will take a more pronounced role in the coming years. IRL, he is married to Robin from HIMYM, btw...

And I can see Strong going away from comedy in her post-SNL career. She has a "normal" look that will not pigeon hole her (like Bryant and Bayer; they are stuck in comedy due to their looks, unless they get HUGE like Carey or Sandler)

NBC aired the first ever episode last Saturday. So much different than now. Carlin opened up with some stand up. There were two musical guests (Billy Preston was awesome.) Andy Kaufaman did a skit. Then Carlin did more stand up.

If you have on demand it may be there.

One of those Hollwood/inside edition type shows was on Monday. They were talking with Victoria Jackson. She has to watch from an "over flow room" because there were too many people. She snuck into the studio to watch the second half.

Um, where did I say he wasn't a star at the time?

My understanding of the situation, and I may be wrong about this, is that when Lorne came back, he cleaned house and brought on that one-year all-star cast to revitalize the show. Again, I may be wrong, but I thought Eddie wanted to stay, but was fired along with everyone else.

this is why he has never come back to host and was a big question mark about the reunion show.

If you know better, please educate.

Murphy left in mid-season 83-84 season. His last show was in February 84. The show didn't wrap for the season until mid-May. Michaels didn't return until the beginning of the 85-86 season, a year and a half later. Murphy was already long gone. He had too much else going on. His last season he asked to pre-tape bits and be on the show part time around his other scheduling obligations which didn't go over well with the cast and management. But he left on his own.... and he did host SNL in Dec 1984.

Why he never hosted after that and why he didn't go to the 25th anniversary show only Eddie knows. He had a bug up his ass about something, but it wasn't because he wasn't asked. One story goes that part of it was a joke told by David Spade in a 90s skit when Eddie was having professional and personal problems. He pointed to a picture of Murphy and said "Look, a falling star". But no, SNL never fired him. He was the show from the day he joined until the day he left. Like I said, SNL ends in 1981 without Murphy. Here was the 80-81 lineup -

Cast

Denny Dillon
Robin Duke
Gilbert Gottfried (early days, before he was funny)
Tim Kazurinsky
Gail Matthius
Eddie Murphy
Joe Piscopo
Ann Risley
Charles Rocket
Tony Rosato

Featuring

Yvonne Hudson
Matthew Laurance
Laurie Metcalf
Emily Prager
Patrick Weathers

They might not have even made it through the season and it didn't get much better until the year after he left. That's when they cleaned house and brought in Billy Crystal, Jim Belushi, Martin Short & Christopher Guest as sort of hired guns. They were already established comedy figures, except for Belushi who had the name. Murphy's importance can't be underestimated in SNL's history. It's a 5 year blurb in TV history without him.

Finally started watching it.

Taylor Swift is the biggest fucktard ever!? WTF was that? Worst performance by a non-actor EVER. Shit was hard to watch.

The Jeopardy skit was great.

Yeah, she was horrifically bad. That bit was already going long so there was really no reason to have her there other than they just wanted to shoehorn a celebrity in. All that did was let everyone know you can skip the episode she'll inevitably host.

The accent that she tried to produce was painful to watch. I kept saying to my wife, "she prolly sounds like those tards, when she talks in her normal voice!? Why!? Who approved this!?"

I've watched the show my whole life, and I cannot remember a worse performance.

Norm MacDonald almost dead last. Even if you're just taking into account his SNL work by itself he was the best Weekend Update host by a large margin. That, and most people on that list couldn't hold his jockstrap. I guess these are the same twats who ranked Kurt Cobain as a top 10 guitarist of all time so it's not like they had any credibility anyway.

How is Farley not top 10, but Poehler is? I can't think of a single memorable scene with Poehler in it, but I can count numerous Farley ones, including "van down by the river" and the chippendales scene w/ Swayze.

I think they got the top 7 right but I'd put Tina Fey around #7 and Mike Meyers #3.

I don't know how someone can come to the conclusion that Tracy Morgan was funny on SNL. Its very fair to say that he never got a shot but he didn't become funny until after SNL.

The most underrated one is Darrell Hammond imo. I'd put him around #20 just for all of his impressions.

Super questionable list.

The only other person I could justify at #1 Phil Hartman.
