And Harbaugh took Hokes 5-7 team and went 10-3. Harbaugh also won as many Big 10 games (6) in 1 season as Hoke did in his last 2 combined.
Seems like an upgrade.

Not to mention our defense went from OK under Hoke to elite in 1 year with pretty much the same guys.

the guy was a head coach at multiple places and was mostly in charge of the defense. He has a defensive mind
hiring a HEAD COACH as an assistant. That's better than hiring another coordinator.
In all seriousness, Hoke may very well turn out to be a great DC. However, we don't know that for sure because he's never been one. So there's nothing to judge by.
It's like this. Norm Chow has been a great OC, but was an utter failure as a head coach. If someone hires him to be their OC, they can be confident that they are getting a pretty good OC because there is history to back it up.
Hoke has no history as a DC. So, while he may very well end up being a great DC, he also may also have Ducks fans wanting Pellum back as DC. We won't know until the season starts.

Oregon finished 116 in total defense and still was 9-4 beat Stanford and USC down the stretch and nearly beat Michigan State on the road early in the season. They dont need to be #1 in defense just better than they were.
