Well it's up and running - evidently my product key has been blocked. Nice.

Guess we know the answer now - If you use that ISO on a clean hard drive (sort of) you are in for an authentication headache.

Networking will require another windows registry hack, the same old homegroup BS (which I ignore), changing the LAN network from public to work, and a slew of other changes. Looks like it hasn't changed much from 7. All just to get Samba working again.

Does look like they ripped off some features from Linux windows managers - the Start Menu looks a little like my Gnome Main menu launch in Mate. Has a bit of a gnome feel to it, which I like. Pretty quick and responsive. Some bloat - a store and one drive app which will need to be eliminated.

Oh well, back to Windows 7 fresh install tomorrow - update, and wait for the upgrade.

Are you just trying to make Linux connect to Windows shares? If so you don't have to hack the registry. There is a way to create a special account that will let Linux access Home Group shares and all you have to do on Windows is add folders to the library or create a new library to make them shared. Don't understand why it went public on network type though but that's really a quick fix.

changing the LAN network from public to work,
In Windows 10 (since 8 really) there are only two types of networks, public or private. To change from public to private turn on network discovery.

Click on start and select settings. Click on Network and Internet in the settings window that appears. In the next window click on Ethernet in the left panel. In the right panel click on the local area connection icon. Turn on Find devices and content.

Will tear into my smb.conf file tomorrow. I went through several updates to Samba over the past year, will probably have to do some reading on it. Really, the hack shouldn't need to be done - and Samba recommends that it shouldn't be done.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters]
"requiresresignorseal"=dword:00000000

Should be set to 1, which is default. Older versions of Samba needed it 0 on NT domains. It was an old workaround fix I used several years back. Probably needs to be tossed out (along with the rest of my stuff- just ask my better half)

Well, I did get Win10 authetication ironed out (the hard way) - and running. I will need to extract the new product key later. Evidently, the upgrade generates a new key. Will need to save that for future fresh installs. Won't have time until later tonight to get the networking ironed out. Will have the WAN (Internet) set to public and the LAN set to private.

Finally got it up and running over night.

Just getting it installed was a bit of a pain as it failed 4 or 5 times. Yes, I could have upgraded it via ISO, but as a tech I figured I should do it the way many of my friends/family/coworkers will be asking for help with first.

So I played around with a few things just to see how the windows update was handling things.

First of all, if you signed up for this upgrade and haven't seen anything happen yet on your computer, go see if it hasn't already failed. It doesn't tell you that it failed or give you any popup that it even tried.

I'm going to guess when the dust settles that thousands are in the same boat and really don't even know it yet.

To check, just go to your windows update page and click on view update history and see if there is a listing for Windows 10 that says FAILED.

The instructions on what to do are here:
Fix WindowsUpdate_80240020 | SCCM Tips
One thing of note though, make sure you close windows update entirely BEFORE you enter the command at the elevated command prompt and then open windows update back up after running it. You will see what it is trying to do.

Failed again? Yep. That happens. People are reporting it taking 4-7 tries. I think it took me 5?

Basically the MS servers are not handling the load well and are either cutting off your download, or otherwise not completing it fully and this is leading to the error.

I tested renaming the hidden folder just to see what that command would do and it does try to start building that folder again as well, however it only got maybe half of it installed before it failed on that test. I gave them the original folder back (5.9G or so) and after a couple of more tires it finally worked.

Really didn't have time this morning to do much poking around. All of my files and programs are there and google chrome works. At least one game is having issues but I'll check that out tonight.

So far the roll out is a typical MS fuster cluck, but I'm sure everyone expected that. Once they catch up with the downloads that problem should go away.

Killed of Bing and Cortana! I just don't get these personal search assistants who want to know everything about you and I don't care to talk to any damn device...I don't care how snarky (I heard that about Cortana) or funny (Siri) they are. It just isn't the way I want to find things, and most of the stuff people ask I shake my head in wonder and think "God are people that dumb today...?)

I wonder if they are on busy LANs? I about killed my Windows 10 update by starting Linux updates on the LAN at the same time. It seems the MS download sites want to run full bore or not at all...

I just didn't have the patience for Windows upgrading when it wanted... I'd recommend using the forced upgrade with the link KS posted above - no ISO. That's how I did it the second go around on a fresh install of 7. Went off without a hitch.

KeyFinder by Magical Jelly Bean works great at finding MS product keys.
I've used produkey for years for looking up product keys. Love that you have command line use so it can lookup keys across your network. I have farmed many keys with it. But it only does that one thing.
Belarc advisor is another free tool for gathering product keys, but it's massive overkill to use it just for that. It's an entire system auditor that gathers a lot more stuff. Still, free is a great price.

I'm on comcast at home with 176m download speed and at the time I was doing this testing last night everyone else in the house was already in bed. There was zero traffic adding to it or interfering with it.

There are people reporting no problems, some have said doing that fix just once worked (quite a few) and others are saying it took several tries so don't give up. I just happen to fall in that latter category.

Will try that WH, thanks - sounds small, easy to use and unobtrusive, right up my alley

Haven't used Belarc since XP, just too much at once. Other smaller apps can find the same info as needed. BTW take a look at task manger after you start up and check which startup apps have an impact on your boot time. Soluto did this but no need for that now with it being in task manager.

Kinda of a non-techie...running 7 pro on home laptop and I've been seeing the 10 upgrade option but have yet to pull the trigger...what will be better with 10?

Oddly on the work computer running on 7 home and not seeing the 10 upgrade logo on it.

Anyone have other tips about things to check out in 10 after I get home, or links to any sites with like the top 10 changes or additions etc?

PC World has all kinds of tips on Windows 10...some are slide shows that won't work with ad blocking though. If you haven't clicked on the notification icon in the sys tray yet, do it. Any outstanding issues about the upgrade will be listed there. If you right click on the start menu button you'll find a bunch of basic tools and links to Explorer, Control Panel et. al. You can pin Explorer to the task bar from all apps, then customize it to look and work more like Windows 7, the details pane will now show up on the right instead of the bottom of Explorer. (Click View on the menus and select Details if you want it.)

You can turn off recently accessed files in Explorer, now I just need to find a way to start Explorer with library view instead of frequent folders (used to be Favorites in 7).
