Ubuntu's server edition is supposed to be really good, haven't ever used it myself. I just set up a regular Ubuntu desktop for my home server and works like a charm, much better than XP trying to do the same thing.

Have a coworker that is more versed in linux than I am try to setup a PDC with full DFSR and he found getting all of the parts of them to behave together to be a real challenge. Various modules aren't happy with others. Not sure what flavor he used, but it was a full linux distro that wasn't on that sudo root stuff.

Never heard of a Linux distro that didn't have that. Basically a sudo is a way to keep unauthorized apps from accessing critical system files, kind of like the Run as Administrator in Windows. Ubuntu and its derivatives have so much done through window-like apps now that sudo is just used to start the app so it can make the necessary changes. Really I use sudo more to change the network access file than necessary but it does come in handy at times to setup some specialized access the app doesn't handle.

Are they rolling out Europe on the same timetable? If so then it could take weeks to roll out to everyone in this country.

My understanding is it is worldwide, still staggered with Windows Insiders getting the first downloads...even reports of MS trying out a PTP (torrent) download in areas...

He's probably is more a accustomed to using "su" and working in a root shell - that's my preference. I could run sudo with my distro if I wanted. My sudoer file is currently blank - that should tell you how often I use it.

Only 'insiders' are getting it right now according to pcworld. If you weren't a beta tester you aren't getting it on the first DL. How long until the general public starts to see it? Who knows. Stay tuned.

FYI - the preinstall folder is hidden and is named $Windows.~BT. Mine is now about 6 gig so even more has come through since yesterday morning when it downloaded that 3 gig chunk...

But for 99.99% of PC users the fact that Ubuntu and its ilk don't require that anymore is a plus. The shell (or command screen in Windows) is not what users want when using a PC. Linux got a bad rap because it hung on to the shell too long IMO. Most distros now startup and behave more like Windows than DOS which is why it really isn't that hard to teach a Windows user to use Linus today.

Normally that message means it's already installing in the background.

That happens all the time with normal updates and usually means the auto updater was already doing the update you want in the background, but that would be odd for this update as it is supposed to ask you for permission before launching.

Yours may be the first of many issues for our friends over the coming days. Oh the joys of MS update week.

What has happened so far: the files in the hidden directory I mentioned above have been decompressed into a new hidden folder called $Windows.~WS, the Windows 10 update has disappeared from the Windows Update control panel app. Guess it's just waiting to get to the next stage where I should receive notification that it is ready to install and I should see this.

BTW: I can only see these hidden files using the WizTree app, not Explorer, even after changing the setting to show hidden and system files.

Alright windows 10 is installing. Yes you have to consent to it. When I went to updates it had the circle with the bar thru it, then a window popped up asking for my consent to install. I'm excited, always fun to have a new toy.

And my first update attempt failed with error 800240020, incomplete download. :pound: Oh well, found some instructions on how to start over, guess I'll give it another shot. Right now using the Linux machine while Windows tries to download it again...at least it didn't crater the installed Windows 7...
