I just saw an ESPN piece where Jason La Canfora was wondering why the Colts don't extend Andrew Luck and I'm puzzled by it.

The Colts already have team control over Luck for another 4 years. This year at a 7 million dollar cap hit, next year at a team option of 16 million dollars and 2 more years after that if they want to franchise him for 20 and 25 million dollars.

From a business and cap perspective it makes sense to get things done prior to the start of the 2016 season, but worse case scenario a 16 million dollar cap hit in 2016 isn't bad for a superstar QB like this kid.

Heck, this is a violent league. Unless the deal is great for the Colts, rushing into a long term mega money deal with dead money cap hits all over the place doesn't make sense.

Right now the Colts are in a great position with team control and Luck is a very rich man already raking in around 19 million and at a minimum will be doubling that over the next 2 seasons

What am I missing here?

Isn't it basically the same situation as Wilson, but some are proposing because Sea isn't doing anything that they may not keep him? Personally I view Luck as different than other players. I lock his ass up and don't let him go. Guy will go down as a superstar all time elite QB IMO.

Well that can be taken differently than I intended!!!

Everyone is waiting for the Panthers and Cam to take the leap first thinking that his deal with them will then be the basis of negotiations.

And both seattle and indy are hoping the Panthers "win" that negotiations.

And FYI: Franchising Luck and Wilson will cost more in 2017 & '18 than 20 and 25. Will likely be around $23 and $28 when the time gets here.....at least. Cam having a big cap hit in 2017 could make it close to $25 and $30.

Comparing Cam to Luck is ridiculous IMO. I don't understand why some teams pay their QBs like they are great when they aren't.

Luck and Wilson aren't in the same situation because Luck was drafted in round 1. Seattle can extend Wilson after the 3rd year because he was drafted after round 1. Same with Bobby Wagner. Bruce Irvin, drafted in round 1 of 2012, is up for a 5th year option but cannot be extended until after seaosn 4.

The same reason the cowboys signed Romo to that ridiculous contract. Cause its better to have Romo/Cam then Mccown/Smith/Orton/Cassell/Fitzpatrick/ etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Romo is very good QB. His contract wasn't bad it was the stupid restructuring of salary into bonuses that have now made it tough to fit under the cap. Poor example.

Not the time or thread to debate Romo. Im obviously not a believer. But he is much better then the other garbage qbs I listed.... which is why he got a big time contract.

Can you name a performance or two that causes you to think this? Not that he hasn't rolled to some easy wins. I'm talking guts and determination. Games where without Andrew Luck, they just don't win that game. I can't think of one.

I would say just off the top of my head the Chiefs playoff game 2 years ago where the team was getting killed and Luck just went nuts in the 2nd half.

The Colts win against Seattle 2 years ago when they looked like an unstoppable force.

His rookie season his team was down 21-3 at half time to the Aaron Rodgers lead Packers. They ended up winning 30-27 with Luck throwing a touchdown with under a minute left in the game.

That is just a few off the top of my head.

the colts will pay all luck wants . so it is no sweat they signed all these old players for a super bowl run and then the youngsters will be ready to step in 16 .

Yeah, agreed....but not really the topic/question of the OP. It was more about why he isn't being extended, and the answer is because by rules of the CBA, this cannot happen until after his 4th season since he was a 1st round draft pick in 2012.

Based upon his success so far, yes it will be a shock.
