Expectations for the Bucs got a little out of hand before the season, for example:
Herm Edwards: Bucs headed to Super Bowl

They over-performed last year, and are regressing to a success level closer to their talent level. Lovie Smith gets some blame (Josh McCown!?!), but not close to all of it.

Whether deserved or not - he will be on the hot seat very soon.

In a year where the Bucs were supposed to show significant improvement - they are very likely on their way to an 0-6, possibly 1-5 start.

0-3, next heading @ Pitt and then @ NO; followed by Baltimore. They will be lucky to win 1 of those. Good news is, Bucs are 1 of about 5 teams looking for the #1 pick.

Lovie is better suited to be a defensive coordinator than a head coach.

The day will come that the Bucs will figure out that Lovie Smith is mediocre coach and he will be fired but you don't fire a coach after 3 games. That's absurd. It's especially absurd when the biggest problems with the team start at the top. Once Malcolm Glazier handed over control of the franchise to his boys it's been all down hill. They went cheap to use NFL profits to subsidize the purchases of Man U. They skimped at GM (Mark Dominik), they skimped at head coach (Raheem Morris) then cut payroll to the lowest in the league, bottoming out at $40 mil when there was no salary floor. Then they doubled down on idiocy when they hired Greg Schiano. Going into last season Bucs fans thought they had a contender but as most fans do, they highly overrated their talent. This team had 2 players in the top 10 at their position in Gerald McCoy and Lavonte David. Everyone else was just a bunch of dudes. So Dominik left the cupboard bare and Lovie comes in and has to change about 50% of his personnel. So you have a head coach come in and change schemes on both sides of the ball, an OC new to the NFL, a journeyman QB, their best player (McCoy) out for the game, on the road, in a short week, against a more talented, better coached team, oh, and they faced a real live NFL QB after losing to 2nd and 3rd string QBs at home weeks 1 and 2. The writing was on the wall. I told the Bucs fans at work that it would be 42-6 Falcons. There will be other lopsided games not going in the Bucs favor this season. They may be the worst team in the league right now. I personally have no faith that Lovie will ever truly make this team a contender but the Glaziers set out this offseason to bring Lovie in, to bring "Buc Ball" (strong defense, laughable offense, frustrating conservatism) back to One Buc so any idea that he could, should or would be fired is ridiculous.

On a sided note, spread offenses and bunch formations have all but neutralized the Tampa 2 as a base defense. The game may have passed Lovie by altogether.

A superbowl appearance certainly buys you some cache, but I thought Lovie was very overrated in Chicago. Did less with more in a big way. Never seemed able to get his teams in a consistent rhythm. Then, bringing Josh McCown into Tampa, as the starter, no less... That's as bad as Marty Morninwheg bringing in Ty Detmer when he was hired in Detroit with a young Charlie Batch sitting right there. A move that really speaks poorly of the coach on several levels. Then last night, to be down 56-0 midway through the third quarter... Astoundingly bad. His team has quit on him 3 games into the season.

I can't agree with that. They were outmanned, outgunned and outcoached. They got rolled because they are not good.

If he doesn't make a QB change this will get really ugly

He doesn't have a QB. You throw stiff and immobile Mike Glennon behind maybe the worst Oline in the league and you think it will get better?

They were headed for the #1 pick last year and foolishly won a few games. They are probably better off without it, they'll fuck that up too.

Look, I am all in favor of black and latino coaches getting a shot.

But whether black coaches have a higher winning percentage than white coaches is irrelevant in this issue.

Yes, it is three games, but right now Lovie's bunch looks absolutely terrible, and his decision to start McCown is HIGHLY questionable.

That has nothing to do with race one way or the other.

He brought McCown in, made him the starter before OTAs even started, then after watching him flounder for 3 games and injuring himself he stated that when Josh returns, he will be the starter. I've called Lovie Stuck On Stupid since he wouldn't bench a pathetic Wrecks Grossman for a servicable Kyle Orton and he does nothing but justify that label every day of is coaching career.

Had nothing to do with race till someone stupidly posted about the Rooney Rule for whatever reason.

Far as the OP. 3 games is way too soon to be wondering about a HC's job, especially one with Smith's resume. I myself agree with the sentiment that LS is too conservative.

3 games is not too soon to be thinking of or making a switch back to the kid who QBed Tampa last year.

While I would not fire him after three games, right now Lovie is looking like a prime candidate to be fired after one year. Let's see how it turns out the rest of the way.

He needs a defense catered to his defensive style. I don't know about the line backers in Tampa, but I'm willing to bet that they did not have a MLB as long, fast, and athletic as Brian urlacher was. That's huge in the Tampa 2 base defense. He also was missing his has dlineman. His defense needs a defensive line that can terrorize the QB. Thursday night looked like he was forcing a Tampa 2 defense that relies on the linebackers and secondary to react to the play very quickly to a team that wasn't familiar with the scheme. This cause a lot of wide open receivers. He should be given more of a chance to succeed. Personally, I don't think he's all that bad. I think if the bears could've gotten Marc Trestman as an offensive coordinator a few years earlier, Lovie might have a Super Bowl victory already.

his coaching philosophy is wait for the other team to make mistakes. when his teams faced elite qbs they always got torched

Yep. When I heard he went to Tampa I knew things would be rough. He will win games, but like podsox said he will blow the big games. The guy is just so stubborn with his game plan as evident on Thursday Night. Even when his team is getting fucked up, he just stands on the sideline with no emotions.
