He likes to fish and enjoys the NW outdoor life. His kids are now out of high school, but he has family in this area and wants to stay around this part of the country because of it. Petersen doesn't enjoy the media or the limelight and UW isn't a hot bed for that despite having a program that can reach the big stage.
He had taken BSU about as far as he could have and was ready for a new challenge. He had said last summer that it might be time for a change for him.
So why UW? A program on the rise with a lot of talent already there, but hasn't been a top ranked team in more than a decade. The pieces are there, but the pressure isn't nearly what it would have been at some of those other schools. He will be given more time to get it all going. UW just opened a brand new stadium and facilities that are said to be the top in the Pac (although many agree Oregon's facilities cannot be topped by anyone). This is a football town with all other sports a distant second at best. The fan base here is rabid and very supportive and yet we give the coaches their chance to get things done without unnecessary pressure.
then why not stay at boise? he could have more than enough to travel or have his family travel.
then why not stay in boise st?
Bottom line: He likes the region and UW gives him a platform to go to the major college level without a lot of the pressure or media scrutiny.

The reports in the idaho papers said he respectfully requested his name be withdrawn after talking to Haydn saying he had philosophical differences in how to run a program. They didn't see things the same way and he said he didn't think he could run a team under Pat's vision.

Washington lucked out: lost their coach and improved (got an upgrade) doing so.
Yeah, some of what has been reported out here is that it came down to some of the media/booster stuff. Petersen isn't a big "media/boosters guy" and dealing with the media and boosters is pretty much mandatory at USC.
Petersen likes to have closed practices and that doesn't fly at USC. Kiffin closed his practices and the media flipped the hell out and it was a big part of the reason why they took every opportunity to rip him. The media hating him is a large part of the reason that there was so much negativity around the program.

Mike Bellotti has been going around local media today saying that 6-7 years ago Petersen told him UW was a job that very much appealed to him. He didn't say 'dream job', but it was a location and program he apparently has had a great interest in for a long time.
I'm not sure if any of us will ever know exactly what was said and if Haden was ever really going to offer Petersen the job over Sark, but it is safe enough to just say both teams got the guy that fits their situation and just be happy for both.

Not a reason why the job wouldnt appeal to anyone. Especially Pete.
