Late Season SEC OOC Matchups (including weeks 12/13):

Georgia Southern;
Appalachian State;
Alabama State;
Coastal Carolina;
Tenn Chatanooga;
Florida Atlantic;
Furman;
Idaho;
Troy;
UTEP.

A lot of teams in big conferences will schedule 1 of these games early on. Forgivable if the rest of your schedule makes up for it. But this many of these games - all late in the season - and all from the same conference, is ridiculous.

Why do the voters let them get away with this?
Seeing how this comes up every year, I am assuming you are trolling. But in case you aren't, here you go:

This comes up every year and it is really quite simple:

1. Some conferences don't start their IC games until October. September is basically a NFL-like pre-season. Get the kinks worked out against inferior opponents.

2. Other conferences start their IC games in week 1 (the SEC that I know). UGa played 2 CGs in September. Instead of a pre-season, they choose to schedule the OOC games later in the year where they act as bye weeks ... time to get rested, get some young players some playing time.

3. Which one is best? I actually prefer the pre-season concept, even though my conference and teams (UGa and Vandy) do it the other way.

5. Before anyone starts saying this is so advantageous for the SEC, remember this:

A. Each conference can choose to do it the way they want to. If people thinks that gives the SEC an edge, then change it. But, before you do, know that when USCe loses to UGa in week 2, or vice versa, it puts a whole different spin on your season. So, there are pros and cons for both.

B. Many of the SEC teams have tough rivalry OOC games at the end of the year - UF/FSU, USCe/Clemson, UGa/GaTech, Ky/Louisville, and Vandy/Wake. I never see anyone bitching about these games, several of which can change the national rankings. I wonder why that is the case?

C. When you start complaining about this, if you are, remember the first 3 or 4 weeks of the season ... it evens out.

Yep, playing FCS teams late in the season is the secret to the SEC success. You've got it all figured out. It's not because the SEC plays better football, it's not because even with the games they have tougher schedules, it's all about late season FCS games.

Fucking retards.

Not to mention, we get our fourth-string QB's valuable experience in case the three guys ahead of him get injured in the next game.

I never said this. Bama is and has been #1 on my board all year. SEC is a great football conference with some very good teams.

Now, do you almost always get benefit of the doubt to the detriment of others? Yes. Does ESPN suck you off at every chance? Yes. Does your conference schedule like chicken shits for ooc games? Yes.

You guys have some of the best football in the country, which is why the above is bullshit, and why people call you out on it. You should be better than that.

For the poster who laughed because I wasn't around last few hours. Sorry I couldn't tell my kids to piss off when I had plans with them, so I could stay and argue some more.

I have never understood this argument. Shouldn't it be about how many tough teams you play period? Does it really matter where they come from? The teams in the SEC play enough tough teams inside their conference to justify their rankings. I doubt this happens, but in the future, the SEC teams turn to crap, then they can schedule some tough out of conference teams. The opposite is true of a team like Boise St a few years in their glory years. They had to schedule as many tough teams out of conference as possible to gain respect with the BCS since their conference play is pretty much against weak teams.

It's time to face the fact that just about every year there are 3 or 4 teams inside the SEC that are damn good. The other teams including my Longhorns need to get better instead of wishing the other teams have a harder time so mine has a better chance.

Also, please don't forget the BCS rules. DON'T LOSE LATE! If you do, you are screwed. It's their rules. You either play by them, or be shit out of luck and I really don't think it's going to change much next year with the playoff. Just more positions up for grab, but you still won't be able to lose late.

Nicely stated. It's hard enough to win any kind of championship, conference or national.

If you play a big enough opponent, you can get a two fold deal, make big money and get a recruiting boost due to playing in an area you want to recruit in, plus national exposure.

Just look at Alabama's class this coming year, current recruits coming from 13 states. Last years group was from 14 I think. Its not always about the home games and local fans, its can be about spreading around to fans from Dallas or the Atlanta Area. This one off neutral site game has been a big thing for Alabama and helps tremendously with national exposure to recruits.

Not many neutral site games going to pay what the Buckeyes rake in for a home game.

Looks like Bama is getting some playing time today for the third and fourth stringers.

Should anyone give Florida any more grief for scheduling Georgia Southern? 14-10 GSU in the third...

Its not always about money and i think that is why Alabama and Nick Saban are staring at another number 1 recruiting class. Recruits equal results on the field and apparently these national exposure games are good for recruiting. All we hear about is how much money tOSU has, couldnt they lose some on a neutral site game to gain a possible recruit from an area they might not otherwise get?

This is totally different from your OP which was all about playing the OOC late ... your OP was about when the game were played.

As for OOC, we've had a billion of those threads, too. No conference schedules a really difficult OOC. Some teams do, some teams don't, and they cycle up and done for various reasons.

By the way, I'll be looking for your post next week when the SEC has all the OOC grudge matches at the end of the season. But, I won't hold my breath.

I work with an engineer that graduated from UF. I asked him about Florida playing Georgia Southern late in the season and he started going on about how good teams like GA Southern and Appalachian St really are. I couldn't believe him. Of course, I keep mentioning that Jacksonville Jaguars might draft Bridgewater and he says there is no way. After all, Bridgewater is the QB from Louisville and they are nothing compared to the SEC. I did remind him that UF lost their bowl game to Louisville, but he says it was just a fluke and Louisville got lucky.

So, Louisville is not a good team, but App St and GA Southern are kick-ass!! :L

Wasn't paying attention. Was tracking UNA's survival of Tuskegee in the first round of the Division II playoffs. Couldn't get audio feed for it, so had to track it on the forums.

For the Bama game, my ESPN3 feed was blacked out in Huntsville.

Well, the UF fan you are talking to is an idiot. There isn't anyone here, true fans, that believe any of that.

What's :L is that you are acting like one stupid fan represents everyone else.

While I wont go so far as to say Louisville is not a good team, i do know that App St. and GSU are both really good FCS programs. A few years ago App St rolled off three straight National titles in FCS, thats good at any level and GSU has been good for many years. Now, comparing them to FBS level teams is a different thing, but every dog has his day.

ESPN sucks off the top teams no matter where they are. If you think it's a SEC only thing then you have a short memory because it wasn't too long ago they were sucking Texas off.

People "call us out on it" because they are just looking for any rocks they can find to through. But it's a dumb complaint and always will be.

Tough for them to lose anything. They are supporting the largest athletic department in the country. 36 varsity sports. Got to pay for the girls one way or another.
