So my Steelers got a win against a weak Buffalo team. BIG DEAL. I can't believe that despite being 3-6 that they still have a shot at the playoffs, with 6 division games left in their last 7. Slim chance, but there nonetheless.

But this is a BASEBALL thread.

I heard the rumor yesterday that was sure to go down at some point. Tulo to the Cardinals.

I had predicted a couple of weeks ago that the Cards would ask about Tulo. They had to. Despite what the Rockies owner says, if they get a good offer, they have to make the deal. Tulo is owed $134mm over the next 7 seasons, assuming his 2021 option for $15mm is not picked up and they pay the $4mm buyout. Despite being the best SS in the game, he has a hard time staying on the field for more than 120 games and the Rockies are not a good team.

The NL West is very tough, with the Dodgers buying everybody, the Giants still having good pitching, and the D-Bax having a talented roster. The Rockies are going to have a tough time competing with what they have.

The Rockies need an influx of new young talent and the Cards can provide that. I think a trade of Shelby Miller, Matt Adams, and Kolten Wong would have to get the Rockies to let go.

hehehe... no mention of the Padres?

I can't recall this being discussed, but is it pretty much a lock that Tanaka ends up in pinstripes?

Who are the Padres?

I don't think it is a lock that Tanaka ends up in Pinstripes, but the odds are "forever in their favor". The question is how much will they have to pony up for the posting fee? I can see the Rangers and Angels making a real run at him, and you just never know with the Dodgers. The Sox will keep their names in it just to scare the Yankees. I also wouldn't count out the Cubs. They have money and they need talented, young pitching if they are ever to rebuild that team. This is an expensive way to do it, but it won't cost prospects or draft picks.

Those threats could have the Yankees bidding as much as $70mm, which does not count against the luxury tax.

The posting fee doesn't count, right? Then there's the money coming from TV stuff that gives every team an extra $25m or something, so I guess that could be used towards that without really impacting a bottom line.

sox and yanks always compete on free agents. red sox are notorious for driving up the cost before they quit and the Yankees end up with a-rod, teixieria, youkilis, exc.

Do you really believe that the Yankees aren't still panicked by the Sox?

I think you need to come out of the clouds.

I hate to break this to you but, no the Yankees are not panicked about the Red Sox.

While it was tough to watch them win, the Red Sox won the World Series for myriad of reasons; most of which cannot be duplicated without unthinkable events occurring. First, there was the catalyst: two assholes set off bombs at the Boston Marathon last year killing and/or maiming dozens, the aftermath of this highly emotional event inspired the Red Sox to unify and rally behind the city, grow out their facial hair, and become this band of brothers playing out of their minds for 6 months, they were like rabid dogs going after that trophy, and nothing was going to stop them. This year was magical in Boston, and I’m sincerely happy for the people that are actually in Boston and Massachusetts who lived through that horror.

This is not to degrade the accomplishment, because it was a great one. But the Red Sox had an amazing amount of stars line up in their favor this year, in fact you can go back even father than that to the good fortune to have the Dodgers bail them out of the awful situation the Red Sox had gotten themselves into last year. The Red Sox reinvested almost exactly the $60 million-ish they removed in base salary for seven free agents (Ryan Dempster, Shane Victorino, Stephen Drew, Jonny Gomes, Mike Napoli, Koji Uehara and David Ross) plus one trade acquisition (Joel Hanrahan).

They got value out of almost every single player they signed, which is incredible. All of this happened in one year, it has a lot of Boston fans kicking back in their chairs, putting their feet up on the desks, lighting up a cigar and saying, “well, that’s all set…not we can just kick back and watch the titles roll in for the next five years”.

If only it were that easy, lol.

The Red Sox will be good for a while, no doubt, but unless you guys plan on having an annual terrorist attack in your city to kick off baseball season, you will never see anything like 2013 again.

No matter how good Tulo is - thats a helluva price to pay for a guy whose trips to the DL can almost be timed

If only that were the reason. Whatever makes you feel better.

This has nothing to do with "stars lining up", the bombing, beards, or anything else from 2013. This has to do with how the two teams line up for the future.

The Sox have a contending team. Whether you see it as a 2014 World Series winner doesn't really matter. What the Sox have are talented, young players either already on the roster, or soon to be as early as 2014. These players will be under team control for a minimum of six years on a team that has very low salary obligations beyond 2014. That gives them the ammunition to be able to extend them further and keep a core unit together without expanding the payroll beyond what it already is. Oh...and we would have the flexibility to still sign free agents.

The Yankees do not have this. They have an aging roster of high salaried players that are not getting any better. They do not have the young talent already on the roster, or soon to be coming up from the minor leagues. In fact, their best prospects all seemed to take a step back when dealing with AA ball for the first time. Forget about pitching prospects. They are non-existent, at least to the point of any contributing before 2015 or 2016.

This will set the Yankees in panic mode, because it isn't just the Red Sox they have to worry about. They may be the least talented team in the division when you factor in the minor leagues.

The Yankees aren't going to sit by with a 5 year plan while they watch their biggest rival raise flag after flag, and potentially steal away a player they really want. They are going to spend. Right up to or beyond that $189mm figure.

The Twins announced that Joe Mauer will become a full time first baseman in 2014.

This is a smart move considering his concussion history, and the amount of money he is owed on the remainder of his contract. They need his bat in the lineup at any position.

ROY being announced at 6 tonight on MLB

AL: Chris Archer, Wil Myers & Jose Iglesias
NL: Jose Fernandez, Shelby Miller & Yasiel Puig

Tough choices. All deserving (although I hope Puig doesnt get it b/c of his over inflated ego)

And there are those like me that come into work today for a half day and then get a floating day to take any day the rest of the year.
