Just curious, what makes you so certain Duke will fall off the map when Krzyzewski retires?

I can't imagine why any top coach would pass on Duke. Let's just say Shaka Smart for example. Why not? In basketball he's a recognized name already. He'll have the Duke name behind him. He'll step into a situation where he has the potential to win immediately. And like magic....the recruits will keep pouring in because they love Duke basketball and they see success is still to be expected.

I don't expect it to fall off the map, I just don't expect them to continue to be a top ten team annually. I doubt they bring in top recruiting classes yearly, even though they're duke

I'd say I expect them to be similar to ucla now

You Hokies haven't been around long enough to understand the thought processes that run rampant in Chapel Hill :L

With everything that seems to come out of Chapel Hill on almost a weekly basis now I'm not sure it was even conceivable that anyone could have understood their thought process.

VT doing nothing while the ACC crumbles around them reminds me of Beamer doing nothing over the last few years when weaknesses in his coaching staff were obvious. Is there going to be a point where being in the ACC is as bad as being a VT football fan in 2012?

seriously, we need to get out while we still can. this is pathetic. im sick of being a football school in a basketball conference. if i had my pick i'd like to go to the B1G as its a conference i think we arent too far from geographically, and i think we could very well compete in that conference in football. however, at this point, i just want to get out. i dont want to be stuck in a conference without fsu and clemson and with uconn, cincinatti and louisville. strike while the iron is hot and gtfo

If I had to choose, it would be this:

1. ACC+ solids from Pitt, ND, FSU, Clemson, Miami, GT
-we get to keep our recruiting bed, keep road trips somewhat close but have premiere programs and money to be made with the likes of ND and resurgent FSU and Clemson.

2. B1G We fit better there culturally and the money we get back can't even be matched by the SEC. We get into the CIC and AAU status is all but guaranteed. The B1G has been down but they sure aren't losing any bowl bids or recruits over it.

3. SEC Amazing football atmosphere but I do not think we are a cultural fit there. Still, it would open up new recruiting ground for us and elevate the program, as well as the bank account.

Of course, I am looking at this from the University's perspective more than just the AD or football team. I come from academia and may one day return to academia. The CIC stuff along with the great relationships that we have built in the ACC would make us a research giant in some very cool fields. What is nice about academic relationships is they don't die if your AD switched conferences, but you can certainly gain new ones.

i'd agree except that i highly doubt that clemson and FSU will stick around. feels like its only a matter of time, and i really dont want us to continue to add basketball schools.

You're 100% correct, although I'm not sure the alumni have a huge say so in what happens. If Clemson and FSU are offered a spot in the B12 or SEC, we're both likely gone. I would fully expect VT to do the same FWIW. That being said, IF VT and FSU stick around, I would support Clemson staying put. For all my bluster and (yes, actual) hatred for the state of (and their universities) North Carolina, I like the traditional rivalries and regionality of the ACC.

It's ludicrous to think that Duke wouldn't have their pick for a head coach when Krzyzewski retires; I fully expect Duke to continue contending annually for the ACC basketball title and tournament in addition to being a perennial top eight seed in the Big Dance. They will get players and will upgrade facilities accordingly when the time comes.

With everything that seems to come out of Chapel Hill on almost a weekly basis now I'm not sure it was even conceivable that anyone could have understood their thought process.

Zing...

Having their choice of coaches does not mean they will make the right choice. See UNC before Roy. And I don't know that Duke will be able to recover from a mistake as easily as UNC did. It is harder to recruit to Duke, given their academic standards (or the lack thereof at UNC). Not saying Duke will fall off the map, or even take a hit, but they do not have the margin for error that UNC has.
