ugh:

Right-hander Heath Hembree was shut down and will have an MRI on his right elbow after complaining of soreness, according to our old friend Baggs. You never know how these things will turn out. But you also never want to hear the words “soreness” and “MRI” when talking about a top pitching prospect.

Yikes...

He has not been pitching well lately, so the story kinda fits...

Well, if it is worst case scenario, and he is shut down for 18 months, he will be ready by mid-'14 (with 1/2 a season in the minors), which is not bad. Keeps his clock from starting, at least...

Thank God for Bret Bochy? currently closing in Richmond. Doesn't have Hembrees heat, but he hits mid 90s with GREAT control.

It's being reported as a flexor tendon injury though, not a UCL. Worst case for a flexor tendon is the career is done.

Update on Hembree:

Finally, an MRI confirmed a flexor-tendon strain for relief prospect Heath Hembree. He’ll be out up to two weeks.

So it is a tendon strain. Must be minor is he's only out up to two weeks. And it probably means there is some other reason he was pitching so poorly in may and june.

Unlike fans, the FO doesn't care about prospect rankings. From what I've read, they told him to scrap blowing people by with his fastball and further develop the slider/change.

Yeah from what I've heard, he his working hard on his secondary pitches which would lead to some deceiving numbers. He's still throwing hard, he can still blow people away, but I think the Giants realize that they won't be able to ease him into the bullpen at the majors with guys falling down/faltering and that they will need him in high leverage situations sooner rather than later. So they want him to be ready, completely ready.

Apparently, it's not working too well. I always cringe a bit when I see a young pitcher starting to feature a new specialty pitch within a season. Seems to lead to injuries, often.

Well, they are secondary pitches, and when one is told to primarily use them it could lead to some crooked numbers. No offense, but I think you're being a tad shatty about PCL pitching numbers. :fish:

And don't forget about Josh Osich. Giants are still easing him in, but he's started his last 2 game (only lasting into the 3rd inning in both). He's obviously on a pitch count and he hasn't been too effective yet, but when he's on he has a 94+ mph fastball from the left side.

I think he's going to get the Pen treatment, and if he holds up then they'll stretch him back out into a starter.

We need a non loogy out of the pen something bad when Affedlt is shown the door next year, and he's pretty polished. I expect a promotion to AA at some point this season with an invite to ST and a shot at a job in the pen.

Dudes only pitched 18 innings and is coming off TJ surgery. I think they are going to take it real slow with him. He's already been on the DL once this year. But I do agree that he is very polished, and if they don't feel he can start consistently they will teach him to throw out of the pen.

But I see NO CHANCE of him making the club next year, maybe a late season call up if he shows leaps and bounds of improvement and arm strength.

Shatty would be to extrapolate from his poor may and june to say he never will be any good, or something outrageous like "the Giants always ruin pitching prospects when they have them work on secondary pitches."

Learn your meme.

Not sure how I missed all the activity on this thread yesterday, but...

So Hembree, in a Matter of days, goes from "out 18 mo w/ TJ", to "career over", to "out a max of 2 weeks, no big deal".

And they call us the lunatic fringe? WTF?
