Why is Ichiro considered automatic for HOF?

but I do question whether a non asian player with his career path would be a HOF... as pointed out his offensive numbers are pretty damn over-rated...

A non power hitter who had a non impressive OBP, would likely not even stick around the league when his BA dipped... But ichiro from 2011-2018 has played 1963 games with 3389 PA... and in those years he was a below average defender too...

and had 845 of his 3089 hits

His 12 year Seattle numbers aren't much worse than Jeter's career, and Jeter is first ballot. Unanimous according to the ball washers

.322 .365 .417 .782 113

Ichiro had a great 10 year span... but after those 10 years he wasn't great, and reached the milestone due to compiling...

I would agree that Ichiro's 10 years was better than Jeter's best... but why are we comparing these 2 players?? Is it because I am a yankee fan??

haha, that actually had nothing to do with it.

I was just comparing notorious slap hitters, and I knew Jeter's ops+ was similar

the difference between Jeter and ichiro, is Jeter had MORE good seasons than Ichiro...

Jeter broke the 3000 milestone in 2011, from 1995-2011 he had only 1 full season with an OBP worse than .350
Ichiro Broke the 3000 milestone in 2016, from 2001-2016 he had 5 seasons with an OBP worse than .350

I know I am a yankee fan, so I have some bias towards Jeter... But he really gets too much hate outside of NY... He really Had GREAT stats...

 thought you hated "slap hitters...?"

Nope, only the ones who are the eight highest paid player in the history of the sport, never did anything in the post season and turned a career year fluke into a giant contract.

Oh and Ichiro 5'11 175 Mauer 6'5 225

Which one should be the slap hitter?

I know you are joking... But seriously, do you think if Ichiro was not Asian he would be seen to be as good as he is seen??(terribly worded question)...

Why would you exclude his non-Seattle numbers as if they didn't happen and affect his career averages?

The thinking was, if you are a Hall of Famer after 12 years, can you play yourself out of it by finishing your career as an average player?

Probably arguing semantics here, but calling Ichiro an average player outside of his best 12 year run would be very generous...on the whole, he was downright bad (at least offensively).

true - but that was from ages 37-44, when most players suck.

Man on second two outs. I would walk Ichiro depending on who was batting after him.

We're talking about the 2000's to mid teens Seattle Mariners here. It doesn't matter who was hitting behind him; they sucked.

I don't know. Probably a better chance the next guy goes yard or splits a gap. Depends on the score I guess.

The chance was very low, actually.

Just a side note.

I noticed while looking at Ichiro's stats that he lead the AL in intentional walks 3 times.

How does that happen?

You should have seen the team around him. That team around Ichiro is the reason Felix Hernandez won't be a HOF pitcher.

I don't think you can use that same excuse for Felix, considering injuries, velocity and increased walk rates are a big part of his decline (you can only blame so much of that on his teammateS)..

Oh hell yes you can. His decline doesn't have anything to do with on just a below average team he would've been a damn near lock for the HOF, just using these last 10 years as wins collectors. The dude had to pitch knowing if he gave up 2 runs the game was over from the age of 19. The offense finally gets good when he is a number 4 starter.

For a couple of years King Felix was the best out there, still I like to see a couple of more years outta him before he gets my Hall of Fame Blessing ... He's 32, he still has time!!!
