Here we go again, another year of Trend Dilfer, Joe Flacco, Doug Williams, Jim McMahon (yes I said it), Jeff Hostetler, Mark Rypien, Brad Johnson and Russell Wilson showing the world a franchise quarterback is NOT A REQUIREMENT to win the super bowl.

Yes, this stems from years of hearing the bears NEEDED JAY CUTLER to be a franchise quarterback, or give away a shit load of picks to move up to get Trubisky, who they would have gotten anyway just to have the Franchise guy.

Flame away, but this is yet another reality check.

Yes, some team will give up two years of first round picks to get Nick Foles from the Eagles to make him a "Franchise" quarterback, and he will never see another super bowl.

28-43, 373 yds, 3 tds 1 int (great play on a wr tip ball)

Those stats for the winning team's QB win the MVP 100% of the time.

That was a franchise QB performance, so was Doug Williams...those names shouldn't be associated with Dilfer and the Brad Johnsons of the 1 ring bandits you've listed.

I agree with what you're saying, but the SEA/BAL/TB model is not any easier to build...SEA hit on DEF studs late in the draft. Even then they had to get great performances from the QB spot to finally win it all. I think too much is made of the franchise QB because you need so much more to win consistently (note the Chargers and Lions)...but if you do have one, building around them should be easier.

Russell Wilson shouldn't be mentioned w/ those other QB's. He's 1 of the best QB's in the game right now. Also he's never had a sub .500 season as a starter & has already played in 12 playoff games.

Kaep could have the same numbers in Seattle...just sayin...

You don't have to convince me. It's the hoop experts that continue to argue.

Next man up.

Notice you hardly heard mention of Edelman, Hightower, Branch being out. Just do it.

GB fans and a good portion of the hoop totally gave up as soon as Rodgers went down. That's pretty sad when people want to use that as an excuse. One player out of 53:doh:
Yeah the balanced team works better than the "stars and scrubs" team. The Patriots have been doing it for years. I was happy to see the Eagles going that way in the last year or two. When you have Burkett, White Gillislee and Lewis you can rotate them around depending on the opponent and if one gets injured use the next man up. When David Johnson gets injured the "next man up" is a huge dropoff.

Yes he is good, but he won the superbowl before he was dubbed "Franchise" and has yet to dominate back to it, even with a stellar defense.

Oooooo I love how the OP slid Flacco's name in there all nonchalant as if it weren't going to rile up a particular fanbase...

Good work sir

Flacco again was deemed Franchise, ended up sucking up 29 million of a salary cap, thats, what 25% AFTER winning and never getting back.

Wilson?

Umm, he's kinda a franchise player at this point.

results. Brady got results, Pay-a-ton got results,

Completely agree. The guy is a franchise QB in every sense of the term

Just bugs me when this need is there. Look at the final 4 teams with one franchise guy and three teams that might not even start them next season.

Thanks for responding everybody, I guess the current state of sports millionaires and owners wanting to put more of them in that position is bothersome for some people.

At least I deem drafted franchise guys a little different than trading for a "franchise" guy. At least the Wilsons, Wentz, Brady guys were not paid by other teams. And yes, I hope Trubisky gets there, its not his fault a GM gave up picks to a virgin GM to get taken.

Not disagreeing with you. I never thought Flacco was anything special. But Baltimore was forced to make that decision. He played one of the best QB postseasons in NFL history and was only 28 years old at the time. They couldn't let him walk. They had to pay the man & bank on him being the future. Joe just never lived up to it.

And still it was the coach and his silly player vendettas that cost them this game.

You don't need a franchise QB you just need him to play like one during the playoffs.
I don't even think that's true. Though similarly to earlier in the thread, that's the path of least resistance. Peyton Manning was not all world in both of his SB runs as I recall.

Next year is going to be pretty interesting in the AFC assuming the top teams don't wet themselves in the offseason. AFC has a chance to bounce back in a big way after a tough luck set of injuries and bad coaching on up and comers.

Right, and as I and others have pointed out, it's pretty similar to Joe Flacco's run in the playoffs. My argument being there isn't one real way to win in the playoffs, just easier paths than others.
Agreed. The Bears in '85 and the Giants with Hostettler in '86 are other examples of the "other" way.
