Here we go again, another year of Trend Dilfer, Joe Flacco, Doug Williams, Jim McMahon (yes I said it), Jeff Hostetler, Mark Rypien, Brad Johnson and Russell Wilson showing the world a franchise quarterback is NOT A REQUIREMENT to win the super bowl.

Yes, this stems from years of hearing the bears NEEDED JAY CUTLER to be a franchise quarterback, or give away a shit load of picks to move up to get Trubisky, who they would have gotten anyway just to have the Franchise guy.

Flame away, but this is yet another reality check.

Yes, some team will give up two years of first round picks to get Nick Foles from the Eagles to make him a "Franchise" quarterback, and he will never see another super bowl.

Fans will still use the injury excuse as to why their team lost regardless.

Not needed, no. But makes the task monumentally easier when you have one. 6 of the last 7 SBs have featured either Tom Brady or Peyton Manning as a starting QB. Two definitive GOATs. As the old saying goes, you can't win it if you aren't in it. A Trent Dilfer or Brad Johnson or Nick Foles may be able to get you one. But if you want to consistently be in the hunt, you better get yourself the best QB you can.

depends on how a "franchise QB" is defined. teams frequently want to take borderline starters and roll with them under that label, which of course just leads to repeated failure.

manning, the lesser manning, favre, brees, mcnabb, brady, big ben, etc. you build a balanced team around a legit QB, you're going to consistently take care of business.

That is great an all, but I rather have a franchise qb than not.

Is it necessary? Of course not. Is it the shortest route to get a SB? Absolutely. Nick Foles ain't a franchise player....but he played like it....and last night, the Eagles NEEDED that performance.

Russell Wilson shouldn't be mentioned w/ those other QB's. He's 1 of the best QB's in the game right now. Also he's never had a sub .500 season as a starter & has already played in 12 playoff games.

Oooooo I love how the OP slid Flacco's name in there all nonchalant as if it weren't going to rile up a particular fanbase...

Good work sir

Was he in 2013? Now shouldn't have much to do with anything, imo. I personally agree, however.

Is Eli actually good though? Peyton wasn't good his last SB. Ben is was sketchy his first SB.

It is easier to try and build around a franchise QB than it is to try to build a team that can win with a scrub QB. If a team gives up the farm for Foles that is a mistake of evaluating talent. But if you have an Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady it is easier to build around them.

Which is another excuse that was debunked by the Eagles. They lost an MVP candidate in Wentz, The best LT in then NFL in Peters. One of the best LB's in the NFL in Hicks, Lost the dynamic Sproles and still managed to win.

It’s like trying to win in Hockey with a bad goalie or in baseball without good starting pitching. Sure you can do it, but it’s by far the exception and not the rule. A QB in today’s game makes what would otherwise be bad teams into contenders. The Packers go from being an 11 ish win team with Rodgers to being a 4 win team without him. Hell im not convinced the Patriots are over .500 if they didn’t have Brady single handedly winning a lot of games. Their defense was bad.

So ya you could build a stud team in all areas and win without an elite talent (see Philly, Jacksonville, Minnesota). But unless you’re great in pretty much every other area, not having a great QB will pretty much doom you in today’s NFL
