Could be an FU on the way out to Butler.... If so, it probably cost a championship with the way the defense played all game.

On a defense that's as talent deficient as this year's Patriots team, just mind blowing that one of the best players in the secondary was riding the pine.

Just read an article that says the decision to bench butler for the entire game is one of the worst coaching decisions in SB history. They say it's up there with 1) carrolls decision to throw it instead of run lynch and 2) Atlanta's decision to keep throwing the ball when they had the lead.

I would tend to agree with author of that article.
Who was the author? M. Butler?

Maybe Billy B got a big cheque from the Eagles to keep him out

Just kidding..... it was probably a discipline issue. It's too bad for Pats fans anyway.

This pretty ends his tenure w/ NE, no? Butler plays 98% of all the snaps throughout the year and is limited on the field tonight... I didn't get this at all... Even if they're game planning to have heavy nickel w/ 2 big CB's, you still used Butler in 98% of the snaps throughout the year so obviously you game planned with him... To start Rowe, ok... but to sit Butler is a head scratcher....

Whatever reason to keep Butler out of the game, I hope it was worth it.

It cost them the game, IMHO. He wasn't benched. He did play on special teams. There were reports that he was sick earlier in the week. Guys watching the game with me all agreed, "Butler would have made that tackle," or "Butler would have broken that one up."

If the Dark Lord wanted to punish him, don't make him a starter, but by halftime it was obvious that the secondary was not getting the job done. I mean, like, Jason Bademosi? Eric Rowe?

This is Belichick being vindictive to the point of not caring about the impact on morale of the team. We have seen it before.

Jamie Collins, Richard Seymour, Lawyer Milloy...

I think there is a history with Butler that probably goes back to him exploring restricted free agency last year. And Belichick looking to hurt his market value as he enters UFA.

Butler is UFA and the Pats will miss him next year. To be honest, a lot of Patriots chase the money when they become free agents. It's not unexpected.

McDaniels is gone. Patricia is gone. They're going to need to make big adjustments to new co-ordinators next year on both sides of the ball. Brady is still the best QB in the league, week in and week out, but the window is closing.

They'll win their division next season, but I don't see a deep playoff run.

The Dynasty is over.

Oh, he would have definitely made a difference. Tackling to prevent a first down, for instance - Butler makes those plays and Rowe doesn't.
Yeah, they got burned, but have to credit Eagles offense. They made key plays.
Pats choked it toward the end. I think they hould have run the ball when they had it with +2 minutes left. Whatever.

Butler is a good tackler, but let's not make him out to be a shut down corner. He was getting beat all year. How quickly some forget.
He can be replaced. Not by Rowe. Rowe is a nice nickel.

This wasn't a direct shot at you Debbie. I just happened to click the quote button on your post.

I didn't realize he did not play at all until this morning. He may not be a shut down corner, but to leave him wanting on the sideline? ah, fucking Pats they do the wierdest stuff.

Somehow I don't think the change in OC will be that big as long as Brady is there. They will still be good on offense. Not sure what to make of Patricia. I haven't watched enough Pats games. Not a stout defense statistically. Is that just a lack of talent on defense? I think the Pats will be there competing as long as Belicheck is there and Brady is playing at a high level.

I dont think it was an FU to Butler by BB. He could get sued for that. Either he didnt feel Butler was ready or it was disciplinary. No way you sit him though. No matter how bad he was all year he was still better then Jon Bademosi. Hell, they could have gotten Deon Sanders out of the booth and he would be a better option then Bademosi.

Agreed.

I couldn't have done it. But BB doesn't do what others do.

Could he have made a difference:noidea: we'll never know and I certainly don't want to torture myself anymore second guessing it.

Thanks for what you did while you were here Malcolm. Good luck in the future.

Hopefully he will sign with Tenn now.

Maybe he can get away with blatantly bad DPI to help Tenn win a title.

If it was and FU, it would be one of the most selfish, arrogant moves in recent memory by a head coach.

If Belichick doesn't like you - watch out, he can be ruthless.
