I still don't get WTF happened in the Stanford-Oregon game. Duck player appears to score a touchdown, does not touch the pylon, is called short of the goal line.

Standford player KICKS the pylon, which everybody in this thread just said is "out of bounds" and Bryce Love gets a awarded touchdown.

I don't mind, because I wanted Stanford to win, but I still somehow think the Ducks got screwed on that one play. They sill fumbled the ball twice, leading to two Stanford scores, and then they blew it in OT. No question they made too many mistakes.

Wow, you got BS's for a well written and factual post. How dare a level headed and non-insulting factual statement be found on these boards!

Off with his head! Dilly Dilly
I think you wanted the pit of misery

Es de fuque?

The guy from Oregon kicked the pylon. Ball is clearly not at the goal line when he does. Pylon is OB, player is OB.

Love appears to avoid the pylon, might have brushed it with his second leg, but the ball was forward of his body and his first foot was clearly in bounds in the end zone.

You have that backwards.

See, the NFL used to have it wrong and had the 'extended goal line' where as long as the player himself was not touching anything OB, the ball passing the plane of the goal line either in, or OB WAS a TD. That rule was changed like 15 years ago or something. Early 2k's I believe. It is now similar to the college rules. If the ball clips the pylon to the inside portion of it the ball would have at least also had to have clipped the in bounds portion of the field of play. If the ball hits the pylon to the outside portion of it it never was in bounds across the goal line and is considered out. I do believe that came up a couple of years ago in a game, but I cannot recall which one.

They have it about as right as they are going to make it. The pylon helps with clarity even if some are confused about why OB extends skyward at just that one location.

Play after play we see officials mark the ball in fairly arbitrary terms. Side judges run up to where they think kind of maybe the ball was before a play was down and can be off by more than a yard quite often. Yet we bring out the sticks to get precise measurements of those results and make game impacting decisions on them. We have also seen game clocks run sometimes for seconds after a play is dead and yet will go to the video at times to get that clock fixed to the second late in either half.

There are a ton of dichotomies like that in this sport. This is just one of those things. OB is only clear outside of the end zone when a player or ball physically touches the ground, but technically the OB extends skyward there as well. I think Clarky wants pylons lining the entire field from end zone to end zone because damn it, why only be concerned with knowing for sure where the OB is at the most critical part of the field when a scoring opportunity is involved.

while we’re on the subject, why is the bench considered out of bounds? Wouldn’t it be awesome if you got extra points for running over and kicking over the other teams Gatorade jug before continuing down field?

Why do you have to have a foot in bounds for it to count as a catch? I mean, he caught the ball...

While on the subject, shouldnt hitting an upright during a fieldgoal or point after count as double? i mean its pretty damn hard to hit the upright

Why does the play stop after the ball carrier is down? In rugby you set the ball down, lay there, cover your eyes and nuts, and game on.

Why can’t players on the sideline catch the ball and throw it to players on the playing field?

And why don't teams get points for getting the ball inside the 5 yard line? Seems to me that if they are going to move the ball all that way, they should get something for their efforts.
