If they can't get rid of the shootout at least change the points system. I can't stand that a team gets 1 point just for making it to OT.

Pick any one of these:
1) Dump The trapezoid
2) If any player deliberately injures another...he has to sit until player is cleared medically (and independently) to return
3) Kill the shootout
4) Kill the Cap
5) no more expansion..in fact,..contraction is on order
6) No more composite sticks. The flex on some of them make them like whips. Too dangerous to goalies and shot blockers. What the hell would MacInnis have shot with one of these...or Iafrate? And the wooden sticks never broke like these do, which slows up the game.
7) Anyone in the front office, especially the Commissioner must either have played the game or at least understand how it is played This is more than just a business to some people
8) all Commissioners have to be over 5"10"

Hockey is the ultimate team sport, yet games are decided by a one-on-one skills competition? Completely contradictory.

I'd be okay with 10 minutes 4-on-4 and 10 minutes 3-on-3 sudden death OT. If it's still tied after the extra 20, it's a tie.

I guess I think its better, but just slightly, but to me anything less than 4 on 4 is just as goofy as the shootout. Play 10 minutes 4 on 4 then have a tie.

Mine is more of an enforcement thing. Call the game the same way the entire game from start to finish. No putting away the whistles in the 3rd especially when the same things were called in the 1st and resulted in goals.

I'd be okay with 4-on-4 in ten then tie too.

What I like about the idea of 3-on-3 is it would add extra strategy to the game. Do you go 1 F, 2 D or 2 F, 1 D? Do you ride your top three guys as much as possible and risk a fatigue-induced blunder or injury or do you keep rolling everyone in and hope your 3rd & 4th liners can generate offense? How do you match up?

Eliminate hard cap elbow/shoulder pads, harder to concuss an opposing player without a hard plastic weapon.

No double minor for blood on a high stick (wish I could also include no penalty for breaking a players stick with a slash). One guy is a hemophiliac, another has a chin made of concrete, same action, 2 extra penalty minutes? Doesn't make sense to me.

If you watch sportscenter, you see why Soccer is so blah for so many people, games end in ties.

I like the shootout, let the people go home with a victor. We dont need regular season 4-5 hour marathons.

My change is that point for a tie. So many times you see teams ok to settle to get a point on the road just by playing even. I think settling for that point is the reason you dont see more third period wins. If you lose in OT, you lose period, no point for you. I think that would make overtime more exciting too.

That's not actually an automatic under the rules (I don't think it is at least), just how the majority of officials call it.

Let the games end in a tie. I never had a problem with that and I don't understand why that was so bad for hockey. No 4 on 4, no shoot out, just let the game end in a tie.

Am I understanding right that you'd drop the point for losing in OT but keep the shootout still? Because if teams get to keep the point if they lose a shootout, that would make the OT worse than ever.

And if they would get 0 points for losing in a shootout, that would be the worst rule change in league history.

NHL games that end in regulation last about 2.5 hours real time. That's with scheduled TV timeouts and full intermissions. OT is not preceded by a full intermission and there are no TV timeouts during. Even if we added a full extra 20, that would really only be an extra 30 minutes of real-time game play, which is still less than your average game time in other sports.

It is in the POs when they plan on (potentially) playing the full 20 minute OT period.

There's no way the ice could hold up for 40 minutes straight without becoming a) unplayable and b) unsafe.

Right. If the shootout must stay, the point system must change.

A couple reasonable options:

5 pts - reg win
4 pts - OT win
3 pts - SO win
2 pts - SO loss
1 pts - OT loss
0 pts - reg loss

5 pts - reg/OT win
3 pts - SO win
2 pts - SO loss
0 pts - reg/OT loss

All games count for the same amount of points; shootout impact on the standings is marginalized.

As opposed to the Winter Classic and Stadium Series games that have perfect ice from the first puck drop? The ice girls bring out the shovels to scoop some snow after the 3rd as it is; that seems plenty sufficient to me.

Get rid of the instigator rule. When the players police themselves there will be less headshots and other shenanigans.

They're still playing a maximum of 25 minutes on any ice sheet and they stop the game if needed to fix the bad spots.

When you hit 30+ minutes on the ice it will be nothing but bad spots.

What about three points for a regulation win, and a two/one points split if the game goes to OT?

How would everyone here feel about that?

So if a team loses in OT they still get a point? Don't like that. If you lose, you lose - no points for losing.

Allow "jerking off" and "blow job" gestures back in the game. They have been around for a long time and we have enjoyed them and they serve a purpose. If players cannot make those gestures, think of some of the things annoying little players will do. Plus we like them. How many people do you see going to get a soda when someone is on the ice acting like he is jerking a giant penis off? Plus look at his team mates banging their sticks on the ice and bench boards in support.
