I think this may have to do with guys who have elite quickness, but maybe not quite what you would call elite straight-line speed. The ability to explode off the line, and in/out of cuts creates separation and the elusion of "speed", but when tasked with running just a straight line, they end up looking a bit slower. I've never been a fan of the 40 for that reason - game speed is cutting, moving in and out, and reacting to the play as it develops. It's rare that someone just runs a straight line down the field more than 2-3 times a game.Yeah 40 times can be deceiving. I mean if a guy runs a 4.3, he's electric but I remember seeing guys running 4.5 or 4.6 and they look like they are 4.3-4.4 guys on the field.
Ex. - Derrick Henry ran a 4.54, Nick Chubb ran a 4.53. They look a hell of a lot faster
Just my thoughts on that.
