You coach some place where you can get players close by.

You don't follow legends. There is nothing to improve on.

If possible, you want to work for a HC who was a defensive
specialist, if you're an OC or offensive specialist if you are a
DC. If you go where the HC specialized on your side of the
ball when he was an assistant, you'll be considered a stooge
and he'll get the credit.

Whichever team offers the most money, and then do a real half assed job and spend the rest of my days fishing, fucking and playing poker after they fire me.

I was in Newfoundland one time playing rugby, I said what do you guys do here for fun.

The reply was typical Newfie...

"Fishin', Fightin' and Fuckin', but in the winter time we don't fish."

They also didn't see the need to include drinkin'...would have been like saying breathing.

So I move up from youth to middle school and high school. Then go to a JUCO/CC. After I coach NAIA at St Francis FW IN. Promoted to D3 Mount Union. Move up to D2 Grand Valley State. Then take an FCS gig (would have been App St when they were) either: San Diego, Jacksonville, Montana, EWU, N Dakota, S Dakota, S Dakota St, N Dakota St, or Idaho. Then I go G5 to Boise St. If I get passed up, then either: AFA, Wyoming, New Mexico, CSU, BYU, Tulsa, SMU, Tulane, App St, C Michigan, Ohio U. Then maybe asst at: Washington, Wazzou, OrSt, Colorado, K State, WVU, Tennessee, VT, Pitt, & Nebraska. Then I follow Harbaugh at Michigan.

Usually, you start at the beginning and work your way up.

Look at Urban Meyer. The dude started at Bowling Green.

Nick Saban's first head coach job was Toledo.

That’s a lot of head coaching in the next three years.

Let's say you are a young promising rising coach within college football.

And because of your success as a coordinator you start getting offers from schools, ranging from directional mid majors to blue bloods. Which job do you take and why?

Do you take an offer from say South Florida? Although not much football history and not much historic success, but everything is there to build a power (location) and expectations may be a bit low. Or do you take a job like USC, a historic blue blood that has everything in place to win now, but expectations are high.

Basically do you take a school where you can build your own program and your own legacy? Or do you take a school where the expectations of a legacy are already there and you try to add your name to the greats?

Small School/D2-3/NAIA. Graduate 90-100% of my players. Coach real scholar-athletes. Win 8-10 games a year for 20 years. Retire and never pay for another steak dinner in town for the rest of my life. Serve on committees and round-table discussions. Be a paid speaker and let the pay be the icing on the cake...

We had some guy follow and assist Bo, then come to WVU. Changed WVU football forever, for the better.
I still think the W in the flying WV resembles an upside down Block M, lol!

There aren't many guys that their first job offer for HC is at the blue blood level. They all put in their knocks and figure out their brand and identity at a lower level.

It depends on the personality of the coach, but most are really in love with their point of view and feel like they can win anywhere. Those would take the BB every time. There are plenty that wouldn't and likely wouldn't take an offer to those bigger schools. Not everyone can handle the spotlight.

I'd probably want something in the middle. Not a G5, but not a BB either. Project level P5 where you can come in and bring your own culture with lower expectations and yet still access to higher level resources. But that's me.

To be fair, you get free Nike shit at every school that's signed on with Nike. And you wouldn't have to coach players in those ridiculous costumes.

Ok, you get free shit at Nike sponsored schools, but at Oregon you get the free “Nike shit”. Have you been to Eugene, it is the least likely place in the entire Pac 12 any athlete would go. Pullman and Corvallis is hard to recruit to for obvious reason but there is reasons to go there just like every school. There is no reason to stay in Eugene let alone attend a school in Eugene unless you get the free black market Nike shit.

Comes down to what kind of personality do I have imo.

If I’m a dont take sh*t off of anybody kinda guy I take the blue blood job and put the mega boosters ect. in their rightful place, supporting what I want/need and not them (see Saban when he came to Bama)

If I’m more of a softer guy personality wise then I go USF gig , backslap the money guys and let the surrounding talent make up for the sure to be shortcomings of letting the wanna be’s have too much influence on whats going on (See Mark Richt).

Every time I think I would take over a USC type I think it would be pretty cool to take over like a Texas Tech and build them into a power and basically be king of the program for life. I say TT because there is enough there that realistically with the right pieces you could make them annual contenders for the Big12.
