M's stopped chasing Cuban hitters after Yuni signed. Their foreign scouting or whatever has stunk over the last decade with the exception of Ichiro who was forced on them by ownership...luckily.

This regime hasn't shown it's interested at throwing big money at an unknown international player. Kuma was a bargain signing that happened to go well but he wasn't highly touted. Until I am proven otherwise I just assume we aren't in the hunt for these guys

Word is that the Cubs are in deepest on Yoan Moncada but yeah he seems like a perfect fit for the Yankees for me too.

I don't really know if you can give credit to the Mariners scouting department for guys like Sasaki and Ichiro, I mean it's not like you needed a scout to hop on a plane to go discover him, he was known as the best and there was ample footage. The scouting developmental departments need a serious overhaul.

It'll be interesting to see when the Cuban bubble bursts. Some of these guys have been massive hits in the majors, but with our luck we will finally dip in right when the talent is dry and overpay for someone who is ineffective in America.

I have the same thought, but I also hope the front office doesn't think that way. I would rather them take a shot at one of these guys and miss than continue to miss out on premium talent.

According to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez, Cuban defector Yoan Moncada is waiting for OFAC clearances and could begin private workouts for teams within the next two weeks.

Moncada is one of the most highly coveted international prospects. The 19-year-old has drawn comparisons to the likes of Javier Baez and Yasiel Puig. After he is cleared by the Office of Foreign Asset and Control (OFAC), he'll start working with teams. His contract could land somewhere in the range of $30-40 million. Teams present to watch his "batting showcase" earlier this year included the Braves, Red Sox, Yankees, Giants, Rays, Padres and Cubs.

The Mariners wont sign him, they have made their "butts in the seats" move and seem to be sitting on their hands like they always do. Just enough to get asses into the seats but not nearly enough to win. I thought when they signed Cruz that had changed but since then every bat that we have wanted has signed/has been traded by/to someone else. Seattle will be picking through the garbage when everyone else is done like they always do.

Hey, why so negative? Oh, Mariners history. My bad.

I was pretty positive when they signed Cruz, then they went back into jack shiat mode and its pretty obvious that we'll go into the season with half the roster of garbage hitters again and try to compete. Prove me wrong while you still have time Mariners FO! But I know you wont, you never have.

I am not totally sure on the whole international operations but shouldn't the Mariners/everyone in MLB cool it on the Cubans? Not trying to get all political but with the US opening talks with Cuba it seems very shortly they won't have to spend multi millions just to negotiate with Cubans.

Signing this guy would erase all the disappointments this off season.

Has anyone ever seen the Mariners even mentioned in a rumor as a candidate to land him?

Yes, but the money shouldn't be anywhere near the same with the shady people who get them out of the Cuba.
