Just reported on Twitter by Jon Heyman. On phone so can't copy it.

Interesting turn down though, especially with a crowded Yankee OF and a hole at 2B

Perhaps because they realize Gardner is the better and more valuable player? :noidea:

Gardner is cheaper and better. Phillips is schedule to make $11 mil in 2014, that might be more than what the Yankees want to spend on the position to stay under $189 mil. And apparently there are lots of options at 2B for the Yanks, Cashman said its harder to find 3B.

Remember, the Yankees are waiting on the decision on Tanaka. If hes posted they are going to go hard after him, they really really want him.

Reports say that Phillips would only go if they were willing to open up the contract to give him more money.

Does Garner even have a starting spot right now?

Ichiro the 4th or 5th OF? guessing, he would be a pretty cool 5th guy and could spell Beltran and Soriano...the 3 grampa amigos with Almonte and the other two the young amigos...

I guess Almonte is out all together at this point...

He ought to. Ellsbury, Gardner, and Beltran would likely be my starting outfield, with Soriano DHing.

That is the first time I am seeing this in print.

That is going to work out REALLY well. IF.

If 3 of those 4 stay close to 100% all year, that is a pretty ideal setup. Ellsbury & Gardner can cover most of the OF ground, taking some of the heat off Beltran, which in theory will help keep him healthy. That and rotating Soriano in there "day game after a night game /catcher style", where the 2 speedsters can help hide Sori's sorry glove.

85 homers, 400 runs scored, 75 stolen bags, 350 r.b.i from the lot.

IF.

Yeah, it could be a very productive outfield. I do think they'll move one of them, though, and that it will be Gardner, but I think they'll be looking to get more than Phillips for him.

well there is no 3rd baseman, so Ellsbury can't get hurt that way. The Yankees outfield position seems to be pretty good (again like you said if they remain healthy), it's everything else they have to worry about.

Gardner is a pretty important part of that outfield. An outfield of Soriano-Ellsbury-Beltran would be a bad idea. Soriano and Beltran are not very good defensively, and Ellsbury is very fragile. The Yankees are better off using Soriano at DH as often as possible, and putting Gardner in LF, while also saving him for the inevitable Ellsbury injury. He can be had, but the cost must be steep.

wow, Garner for Phillips...and...why wouldn't the Yankees do this?

Because they're players of similar value, only Phillips makes an absurd amount of money for the value he provides?

its easier to find an OF....(Almonte, Soriano, Ichiro...whoever to replace Garner)...a 2b like phillips is in less supply....

They are not even close to the same player because of positional value and depth, come on your smarterthanthat.
