One of 3 things is happening with this:

1: They take Nathan Mackinnon first overall.
2: They are just screwing with the teams below them
3: This is an attempt to get teams trying to outbid one another for the top pick.

Keep in mind Calgary offered all 3 of their first round picks for the top pick and the Avs rejected it, saying the Flames top pick wasn't high enough.

Seems way too difficult to believe though. He's from Denver, the Avs were his team growing up, there is the story of his father getting advice from Joe Sakic. Avs already have Duchene, Landeskog and O'Reilly up front, take the guy that's going to play 30 mins a night for you.

yeah it doesnt make any sense for them to do this. it just makes their position to trade even more difficult. the panthers are the ones that benefit from this. since they will have the choice of taking jones.

i dont buy it at all. if you dont want him you trade the pick then

It's all posturing. Avs will probably take Jones, or even if they don't want to, they're going to attract more interest in the pick. Maybe they got a read that FLA wants to draft Mackinnon and now they'll trade up to get him and the AVS still get jones plus another piece.

I think MacKinnon will be a better player in the longrun but Jones should be taken by the Avs.
