As I said before, if you cut these guys, you have to replace them. These are guys that provide significant playing time. There is no way we can replace all of these guys via the draft. If we are lucky, we might get 2 or 3 players via the draft than can contribute significantly. Last year, we had 4 or 5, but that is not the norm. So if we cut 6 or 7 vets, we need to find 3 or 4 via FA to replace them and these guys, being vets, will get bigger contracts. That is, unless, we sign lesser quality players. But that defeats the overall purpose. You don't want to make the team worse just to save a few million. So I guess I'm saying that, while we have a bunch of vets that are on bloated contracts, we just can't cut all of them. Some we will get to restructure, but not all of them.
OK. Who replaces both Hatcher and Golsten? If you cut Licht to save cap space in the next week, there is no guarantee that you can pick up a C in the draft that can start. So what have you done? You've made your OL worse to save cap space.Yes but Roberts, Hatcher, Golsten can be easily replaced by guys on our current roster and draft picks. If we draft a center it should replace Litch.
Yes, I mean start or contribute this year.I hope by saying 2 or 3 players who can contribute significantly you are talking only about immediately. I expect 4 or 5 players every draft to contribute significantly with this regime (at least most years). We are not talking about the previous regimes who more often than not drafted 0-2 decent long term players every offseason.

So once again, you are drafting for need. What do you do it Kellly goes in round 1 before our pick and we go DL with 21. Then Martin goes in mid 2nd round before our pick? Now we have no starting C. So Do we force ourselves to take Martin at 21 even though he is a reach there? This years center group is a strong one in the draft. A guy like Martin or Kelly can start for us right away. But one of these guys have to be selected in round 1 or 2. To replace Hatcher I think we can get a d lineamn in the first 3 rounds to replace him b/c the dline is so deep this year in the draft. Golsten can be replaced with Johnson, Nacho, or the Vtech kid.
Plus if you factor in FA cheaper guys can replace these three. Its not like we are replacing three pro bowlers. Plus Roberts already got replaced with Crowder. So we just saved 20M by replacing these four guys.
Hall would be a 4m savings but we need a vet at one of the safety spots. Riley could be gone especially if we draft Lee @21. I agree with the Garcon restructure. I say cut Lavou b/c the had so many injured to deal with but if he is healthy he will stick around b/c he is a vet. The Litch cut could happen if we get a center in round 1 or 2.
I just gave you all the possible cuts. I think there is going to be plenty of money even after KC tag and RG3 release. If PG and Culliver restructure that would be even more money.

I agree about Hatcher. I think its also very realistic that we are drafting a DL with one of our first 2 picks. There is so much talent in the draft at this position that we have a real good chance of finding a guy to productively take Hatcher's snaps.Hatcher is replaced by RJF and Paea.
Goldstein is replaced by Paea and RJF...plus the draft.
Like I said...you don't cut Lich until you have a replacement. There are a couple of those in FA or we draft one for the future.

As for S, Johnson proved last year he is not starting material. Nacho may be, but he may not be ready by the start of the year. So once again, we have maybe made our secondary worse just to free up cap money. This is why its easy to identify who should be cut based on bloated contracts, but much harder to do because they have to be replaced by someone who can atleast play as well. And unless this player is a rookie, he will probably demand as much money as you were paying the guy he replaced.
First, the whole reason why you need cap space is to sign FAs. The drafted players won't cost that much and we don't need to free up cap space to handle their contracts. So you need that money starting next tuesday if you want to sign any of the good FAs.You still can wait to after the draft to make all these moves depending on how the draft pans out. Plus you don't know what is going to happen in FA so Fa could fill offseason holes. Kelly is not gong before the 21st pick cmon now. I think one of those centers would be there in round 2 for us. IF worst comes to worst we still can get a quality starting center in round 3 b/c this class is very deep. Very possible we get three starters out of this draft in the first three rounds.

Sorry about the spelling, but we are talking about the S goldsen, not the DT Goldstein. Or how ever you spell those names.......
Hmm. Not sure its fair to say he was terrible, but he definitely didn't earn his contract. I agree there may be better options, but everyone better is going to command at least what we pay Goldsen, if not more. But if it results in a productivity upgrade, Im for it.From all I read, Goldsen was horrible last season. Replacing him would be like breathing. There are a number of options in FA that would be able to fill the role for a season or two.
So you again are drafting for need. Thats been proven time and again as a failed way to draft. Especially in the later rounds. You continue to say "we should". But what if you can't?I understand waiting on Litch. But we should be able to get a starting center in round 3 b/c its a very deep class. Even if we hang on to litch we still save 16M from hatcher, Roberts, and Golsten.
