Leafs vs Wings at UM. Hell, I'd be more than tempted to make the trek out there. Plus the opportunity to peg Eddie Shack and WW with a snowball or two alone would make it worth the trip.

Brace yourself, I'm the most multi-quotenest mofo you ever did see...

Cooler than Comerica.

Diamonds were a bad idea from day one. You'd think they would have some hardcore engineers on these matters, but instead they leave it to someone who failed 9th grade geometry. ROUND PEG, SQUARE HOLE!! DERP!! (Darkstone does my geometry homework, btw.)

Detroit and Islanders! Lol

 :slapjeffsfacewithmypalm:

Alright Wings fans, let's plan this fucker out right now. I'm in. Let's do this thing.

Do you think we can all raise enough money for me to go?

You know, this might be an ideal situation for a SportsHoopla NHL board meet-and-greet.

Sorry, I'm pretty sure Eddie just said Wings fans only. One flask of Candian whiskey will probably get you in though. (and I won't even pull your Lanny jersey over your head!)

Vancouver - Boston..... meet in the middle

You probably should let Michigan show you punks how to riot...

Sharks vs Wings, bitches.

I think this is the most logical. They'll go with one of the sentimental choices though. Or with whatever Mike Illitch wants. Mike's a pimp.

I'm certainly planning on going, but the last two times I bought NHL tickets, the game never occurred, so I don't know if I should risk everyone's happiness on my curse.

Quit being a pussy...I'm more fun to argue with in person anyway!:fish: (whoever thought up that smiley is more fucked up than I...)

I bet you hit the 7 footer before you hit the birdie...

ARE YOU DRUNK!?!?

That was some serious multi-quoting.

Wow.

Also, I would have to make some form of endeavor to get there if we have a SportsHoopla meet-and-greet.

That, of course, means I won't be attending, as I am a flake.

Wings/Sharks most logical? Have you ever been to a Wings/Leafs game?

No way, gotta be Wings vs. Leafs.

A pretty basic position NBC has maintained is no Canadian teams for the WC. I can't imagine it won't be two American franchises.

I feel that's about to change, especially after this past summer's Stanley Cup Final.

Besides, no one has out right said at any time that no Canadian team will be involved in the Winter Classic.

in fact its the opposite (ie Collins has been setting the table) ... an original 6 cdn team will still have cache in the states

NHLs COO John Collins: "Absolutely, there should be more Canadian teams in these games". "I think there are a lot of markets that would be fantastic," he said. "I'd like to ultimately see these games not viewed as a regional matchup or a Canada game or a U.S. game, but really kind of a celebration of hockey. If you're a hockey fan — whether you're a Canadian hockey fan or an American hockey fan or a Flyers fan or Flames fan — these games are special and unique and you should be tuning in even if your favourite team isn't playing in the game.

my question is ... Will Ilitch be totally pissed about them playing the game in the big house as opposed to the ballpark he owns?

or does double the ticket gate ease his anger????

It's a lovely sentiment, but he doesn't work for NBC and "you should be tuning in" doesn't make more people watch. The bump they get in two markets is a big difference maker in the ratings game. I can't see them giving that up anytime soon. There's just only so many hockey fans out there in America.

Also, it would be nice if it snowed again. I was listening to Tony Kornheiser's radio show and he noted the other day that ratings ALWAYS go up for football when it's snowing. People enjoy the winter scene and they like seeing the athletes face adversity, even if the quality of play is usually diminished.

ilitch, while a businessman, has made gestures to suggest that he is not always about the money (ie letting all three auto manufacturers advertise in comerica for free). also, does the nhl or nbc foot the bill for using the stadium? i would imagine that wouold have an impact. finally, does the prospect of selling >100,000 seats outweigh whatever misgivings he may have?

I don't know all the ins and outs of the leagues broadcasting contracts, but could NBC be convinced to accept Toronto in there if the league negotiated a better simulcast deal for that one game only with TSN or CBC?

That way some of NBCs costs are offset even though they don't necessarily get the bump in ratings that maybe they'd hope for by having a second American market in on it.

Wings vs Leafs would be a big draw with all the fans of both teams from southern Ontario.

I think Wings-Leafs is the only time the Joe gets invaded by another team's fanbase. It's right around 50-50 and makes for great atmosphere.

Update: The Fan 590’s Greg Brady reports that the Red Wings want to host the event at Comerica Park because they’d receive both a cut of suite sales and want crowds to head to Cheli’s Chili and the Hockeytown Cafe instead of everywhere between Detroit and Ann Arbor to eat and drink. Brady says that the fact that the NCAA would demand a cut of the NHL’s pay-out to the Wings, and the fact that the NHL would have to receive a license to sell beer at the Big House, make things a little tricky.
