Dennis Dodd has a good column on this subject over at c-BS.
It's all about money of course. I would prefer it remain the same. Otherwise disparities between teams will enlargen. The rest of the teams would be considered second tier and they would get fewer and fewer quality players.
One day I was just sitting back thinking about this whole thing and I drummed up the idea that the major conferences would tell the NCAA to pound sand and cut deals with Fox, ESPN, maybe CBS as their governing leagues. Players would get paid.
Essentially the Fox league would play the ESPN league in a championship after their repective playoffs.
Face it, TV is the main source of income anyway.
Teh smaller sports would still need the NCAA though, so that would stop the football programs I'd think. For just football though, that isn't doesn't sound too far fethced.
Would they really tho?
The football, basketball, and baseball revenue is already funding the smaller sports. Particularly female sports through Title 9.
True.
So I guess everyone would need to be in one of those conferences? Would the smaller conferences be able to sign deals to make enough money?
I like the idea, would be a fun one to scenario out.
I don't know if they've completely separated yet, Mamba. "BCS" schools still have to rely on the rest of D-1 and the other divisions for OOC games. Will that change in the near future, we'll just have to wait and see.Scuttlebut how I see it they already have. 65 teams have completely separated themselves from the others. its almost split down the middle. With the new "BCS" teams in the big 5 conferences will have 9 guarenteed slots in the new format while the other conferences fight it out for one spot. The money distribution to the power conferences will leave the bottom half conferences flailing in the wind.
The ACC teams and Big12 teams are locked in to their respective conferences for the long term. The SEC and B1G nobody is leavin those conferences. And the PAC12 will remain the PAC12 not PAC14 for as long as I live I imagine. And I am only 36.
Cincinnati needs to get in to one of these conferences ASAP...
They deserve it. Boise? Not sure who takes em. Sadly they may be left in the cold...

As far as Boise and the rest of the upper tier outsiders, I'm hoping they can weather this storm and stay relevant.
No doubt there is more power collectively but it's my opinion that their hand was forced due to inroads made by non-traditional elites. I like to think that all this conference realignment is a direct result of the 1994 decision to restrict schools to 85 scholarships. This rule has allowed more and more Universities to build their programs up to national respectability and has hindered many of the Big 5 conference schools that, historically, do not produce football titles.Youre right. Technically speaking there is no separation. But I think the big 5 confs hold a lot more power now than years past...
After Fordman posted I forgot everything I read before

Kicking half of D-1 to the curb should effectively help these lesser known Big 5 conference schools recruit highly ranked student athletes who, recently, have went elsewhere.
Before the late 90's there were a lot more independent teams who played like 'big 5' conf teams as well. A lot has changed since those days. The AQ status of the conferences made a shift as it was. I hate this idea of big 5 anyway as one of them is a garbage conference that isn't any better than the MWC IMO. There aren't 3 teams in the BE that are worth calling major D1 teams.
As are 50% of the teams in the Big 5 conferences.Yes Big East now called the AAC is shit...
But big 5 is now
PAC, SEC, Big12, B1G, ACC...
Shit is still AAC, Sunbelt, Mountain WAC, MAC, CUSA
