PFT thinks it is likely to be Vance Joseph, or Jay Gruden, but says the odds on Clappin' Jay Garrett might make it a good bet.

And here’s one to watch, given the long odds (and potentially great payoff): Cowboys coach Jason Garrett. Although owner Jerry Jones prefers a coach who won’t try to steal the spotlight, Garrett is running out of chances to prove Jones right for being so patient with the offensive coordinator who succeeded Wade Phillips during the 2010 season, after Jones made it clear that he wouldn’t be firing Wade Phillips during the 2010 season.

If the Cowboys stumble out of the gates, if they are outcoached a time or two (e.g., six sacks registered by one player with no in-game adjustments), and if Jerry catches a wild hair as a Week Eight bye approaches (the first seven weeks of the schedule will be no picnic), Garrett could be the first one to go. And at $2500 for every $100 wagered, that would be a nice way to turn Garrett’s negative into something positive.

Cowboys beat writers think that if Garrett doesn't go to the playoffs, he is going to get fired.

Kate Hairopoulos: It's finally pretty simple. If the Cowboys don't make the postseason this season, Jerry and Co. will finally be ready to move on from Garrett, who is entering his eighth full season as coach. Garrett has shown a willingness to change for what could be his last stand. While coordinators Rod Marinelli and Scott Linehan are back, he brought in a slew of new coaches, including receivers coach Sanjay Lal and secondary coach Kris Richard, who bring fresh ideas and techniques. Half of the roster this offseason is new to the Cowboys. The depth on the offensive line -- a lack of which really got them last season -- has been addressed. If the Cowboys don't get to the playoffs again, Garrett will be the main constant.

Jon Machota: The team would have to regress. It's easy to say miss the playoffs, but if they win 10 games and just fall short, I don't think it's a guarantee he's gone. The chances of him coming back aren't great, but I don't think it's a guarantee. If it looks like the young talent is developing (Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott, Taco Charlton, Jaylon Smith, the youngsters in the secondary, etc.) and he's making better in-game adjustments, he'll keep his job. If they're not competitive in games and it appears the team has given up on Garrett, that's when I see Jerry Jones going in another direction.

Brandon George: The Cowboys have changed just about everything with their team from 2017 except Jason Garrett and the offensive and defensive coordinators, putting the pressure on them to find a way to win and reach the playoffs in 2018. If the Cowboys finish this year with a losing record, Jerry Jones will have to consider finally moving on from Jason Garrett. Some will set the bar at reaching the playoffs is a must, but if the team is hit hard by injuries or lose a key player such as Dak Prescott or Ezekiel Elliott for a long stretch, that could factor into Jones' decision on whether to bring back Garrett or not if the team flops in 2018.

Jean-Jacques Taylor: It's hard to picture Garrett lasting if the Cowboys don't make a deep playoff run, which really means making it to the NFC Championship game. Dallas has won 12 and 13 games in two of the last four seasons, but I can see the excuses already being put in place. The Cowboys have three new assistant coaches on offense, only one starter older than 30 and a bunch of young guys who need to play well. If they don't, Garrett has a built-in excuse.

Newy Scruggs: Man, I don't know. Jerry Jones has a love for Jason Garrett and has made excuses for him in non-playoff seasons (five of his seven seasons as head coach). The Cowboys could have a losing season and Jones could come up with a reason of why it is not the fault of Garrett. The only thing Jones responds to are empty seats. If, and I say if, fans decided to stay away if the club is losing, maybe a change for 2019 is made.

Playoffs or bust? Here's what could lead to Jason Garrett's firing in 2018...

If he hasn't been fired yet what makes you think this will be the time?

Garrett is the ultimate Yes Jerry Head Coach.

The only way this happens is if Garrett "steps down" so that Jerry doesn't have to actually fire him.

Jerry is a businessman. What will ultimately kill Clappin' Jay is the empty seats as next season plays out and people selling their home game tickets to visiting Eagles, Saints and Falcons fans.

 I'm going to say why would he?

I mean it's not the gingers fault they let there best talent walk, that was Junior Jones...

Hell if anything they should give the ginger a raise for be willing to even coach the lack of talent they have been drafting over the years...

Will Jason Garrett be the first coach fired this season?

No. He should remain with the Cowboys as long as possible. I'm all for that.

After looking at the schedule.
He'll be fired after the 2nd loss to the Redskins.
When they're 2-8.

I think Garrett gets fired at the bye. They may face a rough start due to suspensions and an inexperienced receiving corps, and Red J may have to be the scapegoat.

Lewis doesn't get fired midway through a season, as PFT notes, for a simple reason: Bengals owner is too cheap to pay someone for a full season and fire them midway through.
