He seems to be very average this year and last year in the second half looks like an abberation

Yes. Remember we don't know how long he's been fighting that virus and how long it will really take for him to get back to top form. It's almost like starting over from spring training again. It may take him a couple more weeks to really get to mid season form.

My playoff rotation right now. Harrison, dempster, darvish, feldman holland to the bullpen. I dont see how a virus can hurt your performance that much i think he is just plain out under average to average

Then you clearly don't have a clue what you're talking about. It caused him to lose 10-15 lbs and his velocity dropped 7-8mph. Dealing with that and coming back from it will definitely affect your performance.

7-8 mph? His fastball is like mid 90s...

Holland's veolcity is back but his command is off, he just hasn't rounded himself into shape yet

He needs to learn to stay out of the middle of the plate, way too many mistake pitches lately

He looked great against the Angels, minus about 5 pitches that ended up being hit hard or in the stands

Getting his sinker to sink has been his problem since coming back from the DL. Maddux will help him find an adjustment. Don't forget we have probably the best pitching coach in all of baseball.

As i was looking at the videos his fastball doesnt have as much life at 92-93 as it did when he threw 95-96 in his oter starts in the beginning to middle of the season and before his virus. So i can see why hes struggling right now not as much life.

Exactly, when he gets all his strength back I think you'll see an improvement.

This. The 2-3 mph drop in velocity wouldn't matter if Holland were hitting his spots. When you groove 0-2 fastballs right down the middle to hitters, it doesn't really make a difference if the ball is going 92 or 95. It is more than likely going to be hit hard somewhere. His command is what is causing him to either fall behind to hitters for finish them off when he does get ahead. Part of that could definitely be due to his long layoff fighting the virus. Even at his healthiest though, Derek Holland has never been the model of consistency. Let's just hope we see more of dominant Derek and less of doormat Derek down the stretch and in the postseason.

If not there may not be a post season.

I agree. Hollands game has never been about painting the black though. It's been about electric stuff and a fastball that darts all over the place. That 2-3mph drop can and has affected the life on his fastball because instead of darting and diving it's just hanging up.

Watched some video on holland of the second half of last year compared to this year. Last year his fastball came at 94-97 with a lot of life compared to this year 92-94 sometimes 95. I domt know what happened to the 2011 second half derek holland. Hopefully his velocity increases after every start

It's just going to take some time for him to get back top notch. Remember he lost a fair amount of weight from that virus.
