Why don't more teams have their AAA affiliate in close proximity?

The Braves' AAA affiliate is in the same metro area as the big club, same with the Mariners and Twins.

There's teams with their AAA affiliate on the other side of the country(the Nationals' AAA team is in Fresno, CA, and until recently the Mets AAA team was in Las Vegas).

With so much roster attrition that goes on throughout the season, wouldn't it make a lot more sense logistically to have your AAA squad in close proximity?

And it seems like some teams keep the same affiliates forever, where other teams change AAA cities every other year.

The reason the Mets have their AAA in Vegas is because they're idiots. I think they plan to move closer soon.

They're in Syracuse now, I think this is their first season there.

The Twins' AAA is in Rochester NY, not Rochester MN. I never have gotten this.

There's a great, new ballpark in the St. Paul Saints 5 miles away that is an independent league club, but I'm sure they'd love to upgrade to AAA players.

Instead the Twins have continued to re-up with a team in New York that's 1000 miles away. Does not make sense to me.

Really? I guess I always just assumed it was Rochester, MN.

Cleveland and Columbus are in the same state.

Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Cubs, Baltimore, Toronto and Boston are also close to their affiliates despite not being in the same state.

Even though the Mets AAA is in the same state as the big club, the yanks AAA club is closer than the mets aaa.

Syracuse is a 4 hour drive while scranton is less than 3 hours away

Leave it to the Mets to have their AAA team as far away as Vegas for a time

Some of it is the team doesn't really have a choice if their agreement is up and the owner of the minor league club wants to do business with another team. Buffalo, for instance, wanted the Blue Jays instead of the Mets during a year where a lot of deals were up and they ended up just kinda getting stuck in Vegas after.

I'd also venture to guess (though I can't actually prove this) some owners may just have business ventures or connections in some of these cities that make it worthwhile for them. Could be wrong, though.

The Nats being in Fresno tops it IMO.

Hell, the farthest any Braves affiliate is from the main club is Kissimmee, FL, and that's the advanced A ball team.

tbh, i'd prefer it if the Braves' AAA team was in Charlotte

would make a lot of sense

The White Sox AAA team is in Charlotte.

It makes very little sense.

It would, but Gwinnett sure makes it easier. We don’t have to worry about call ups making it to the home stadium on time like we did when the AAA team was in Richmond

your A-Advanced team is in Winston-Salem. makes little sense to have two of your minor league affiliates in NC

i should probably pull for the White Sox as my AL team

yeah, i was talking from strictly selfish reasons since I live in Charlotte

even though Charlotte is the 2nd biggest city in the Braves' footprint, so it would make sense from that standpoint
