Not much of a rack, but a nice spike. The joy of it was that it was my grandson’s first deer. He is 14. We were sitting side by side in a blind at the edge of a field near Hancock, Maryland. It was about 28° with no wind and about 7:00 am this buck and a doe came by. They disappeared but about an hour later the buck came out about 70 yards away. He has a Remington model 700 .243 with 100 grains and a 3x9 scope. The Saturday before he had missed a small six. I was whispering to him like one of those guides you see on the outdoor channel on tv. He said, “I think I’ll take a shot.” We have those shooting sticks to help steady the rifle. With one shot he dropped it with a spine shot.
I have shot a pile of deer in my years. But this was one of my happiest moments in all the years I have hunted deer. That would be 55.

So for the 4th time in the 25 years we've lived here, a grouse flew into the South side of the house and broke his neck yesterday. It was also the 4th dinner of delicious grouse. I dressed out the breasts, cut them into strips, rolled 'em in flour egg and panko crumbs and fried them crispy. Not quite road kill but close~

Whip was pissed that I went hunting without him!

Up here in Washington we got deer, grouse, rabbit and doves opening tomorrow. When does everybody else get started? When is the first day that you're heading out?

I'll be sitting in my stand Friday after work for deer and then taking the dog out Sat to chase some grouse, then back in the stand on Sunday.
Our gun deer hunting season starts on Nov. 21st.

Bagged a basket buck (3pt) whitetail few weeks ago up in the Clearwater region in Idaho. Nothin to write home about, but the populations were very thin this year after a disease swept through that area. Meat in the freezer though!

Seen a 4 point that was a better lookin animal but never got a good enough look. Well... 1 time it was sitting behind a barn on someone's property and I put my scope right on his face as he was laying down. Didn't want to upset the apple cart of the landowner, even though my uncle knew the guy and swore we had permission. The rut was happening but the Doe were just too few & far between. It was tough seein much of anything. Worked our tails off in & out of some vertical terrain & hardly saw any doe. Brushed up a handful each day, and I decided to just take what I could get on the final day.

Nice!

Hey, I made a cool discovery/invention when hunting still sloughs or calm waters like you're hunting in this pic. I slid a clear plastic soda bottle over a golf flagstick, drilled some holes in it, cut off the bottom and secured it with a hose clamp. You push the stick down into the mud so that the upside down clear plastic bottle is just inder the surface. Attach a length of black ice fishing line to the top of the stick and by pulling on it from the blind, you stir up the pond surface the way active ducks would.

In late season, they get wary of that glass-still surface. When the deeks are bobbing around, they don't give it a second pass, they just drop straight in. You might try it~ It might not be as neccessary when hunting a river with current but on still water, it's lethal.

This looks like decoys resting on a pond:

You're the man! Thanks for the tip.

I rarely hunt still waters. Even the photo I posted is actually the Owyhee River. It just moves really slowly. The 4 dec's just off the left side of my barrel are Texas-rigged with a pull-cord in the blind. We agitate the water by tugging the pull-cord to keep those 4 dec's moving (mainly when birds are circling). We set those 4 in a "trap" pattern (don't know if that's the real term but its what we call it) where they are centered between 2 clusters (1 upriver, and 1 downriver). The 4 movers attract the birds to set & drop inside the clusters right in front of the blind. It works like a charm. We fold 'em all day long.

Yeah that looks like a sweet spread you've got.

Good luck the rest of the season!

Spent 4 hours marching around 150 acres and all I have to show for it is 1 quail, and a scratch from a bramble bush when I retrieved it because my 'hunting dog' decided she didn't like thorns.
