That's awesome...A funny hunting story. A friend of ours grew up in Wisconsin in 1940s and 1950s. She was an original tomboy and was constantly getting into trouble at her Catholic school for not being enough of a 'young lady.' She and her dad were close and lived for the opening of deer season. One season, she decided to skip school so she and her dad could head out for the first day of deer hunting season. Her dad had called the school the night before and told the mother superior that his daughter was home ill with the flu. She and her dad go out and she gets the first kill of the season. She and her dad are coming back and the local paper takes a picture of her and her dad hanging up the deer in their yard getting ready to clean it. The photo runs the next day on the front page of the local paper and she gets called into the mother superior's office. She had the front page framed and hanging in her home along with the note from the mother superior that she had been suspended one day for ditching. She and her dad went deer hunting again on the day she was suspended.
Successful trip...
Nice work man, gaddy's are good size birds.Hit the duck blinds yesterday morning... Couple of storms have been passing through the valley pushing the northern birds south. Pissed rain on me during the drive out, but let up when I pulled in. 4" of snow on the ground, and a heavy overcast day. Ripe conditions for fowl hunting, but sadly it was a fairly slow day for me. Not much action in the area either, and the birds were acting pretty shy. Had a couple pairs set in on my decoys and I took down 3 birds, but the bigger groups paid no attention. Lost 1 under an ice shelf on the river bank. She folded over but took to a dive promptly after hitting the surface. Thinking she drowned herself trying to flee to safety. Spent about an hour smashing through ice trying to find her but the efforts are futile in river waters. She was probably a mile down river by the time I gave up. Took home 2 gadwalls though! Breasted them out and got them brining in the fridge today. Will be tossing them in the smoker tonight.
Side note... Starting to see some great pheasant activity on our family hunting property. Pushed out a few hens on the river banks surprisingly. Very close to one of our blinds. My brother said he took down a couple roosters last time out. Hoping to see some success in that area soon.
Nice work! Beauty of a cat, and a nice basket buck! I'd take either any day!In Washington, we are lucky enough to have 3 huntable species of deer. I live on the eastside of the state where we have whitetails and mule deer, and on the westside we have blacktail. I decided this year to hunt for blacktail with my dad on the westside. The late buck is the best time to hunt them but it's only a 4 day season, Thursday-Sunday.
On Thursday my dad shoots this, View attachment 152239 and on Friday I shoot this View attachment 152240.
Not a bad weekend for us
Definitely are! Haven't seen this many gaddys move through the area like they have been this season. I hunt near the Snake between Idaho & Oregon (Oregon side). Perfect area for fowl. We've been bringing home gadwalls almost every weekend.Nice work man, gaddy's are good size birds.
Thanks man. The cat was definitely a surprise!Nice work! Beauty of a cat, and a nice basket buck! I'd take either any day!
I've shot quite a few birds but chukar is one that is on my to do list. I wish there was more public land around me to hunt them.I pulled out an old arrowhead I found while chukar hunting some years back out here in the high desert. Named the draw I found it in "Arrowhead Draw". Highly productive it was for 8 years. The memories of old hunting buddies and the birds we have taken.
The hunting days up that are over now, just got me thinking of those characters I hunted with. Snow began falling today, reminds me of a Norman Rockwell Sat Nite Post picture.
Miss those dam lazy dayz.
Good luck! Snow makes for some easy tracking. You got a blind set up or treestand?heading up to my sisters land after Christmas to do some late season bow hunting
should be 12-16 inches of snow on the ground - I am stoked, haven't been able to hunt in snow for years
