Gruden loves Binns and expects him to be the #2 WR out of camp to start the season with Sanu pushing him for playing time from what I read on the Bengals website. He loves how Binns gets open, has sticky hands and runs crisp sharp route in games.

I've seen several articles that said a lot of the coaches were pushing for him to get into games at the end of last year.

They obviously didn't have the right drills in place in practice to see how hard he grabbed the ball. That, of course, is by far the determining factor.

Don't get me wrong - It wouldn't shock me to learn that Jack Del Rio mismanaged his roster. The guy is a buffoon. I'm just not buying the idea that Binns is all that Hobson is making him out to be (and I love the kid because I'm a UC homer).

I think the organization has serious concerns about the receiver spot and that's why the invested 2 draft picks and have also 'reportedly' been looking at Braylon.

I agree. I was being sarcastic. I would love for it to work, but color me not sold.

I also wonder which one of our stellar corners he was getting open against in practice.

On the bright side, we've come a long way since we started a season with Akili Smith as the quarterback and rookies Ron Dugans and Peter Warrick as the receivers. I'm not really sure how I was able to stay a fan after those years.

Because we keep eating up the lies.

They convinced us Akili Smith was an athlete of Randal Cunningham's caliber and that Peter Warwick was the next Jerry Rice and for a time, we believed it.

This was a discussion on who would make the team with some locks and then Tate, Binns and Whalen on the outside looking in. I was providing some insight from the OC, Gruden, which leads me to believe Binns has the inside track. I never said he was great, good or anything, just responding to the original thought of this thread.

Agreed. It's not that I think Binns will solve all the #2 issues...by far. I was just relying what I've read several times this off-season, and not just from Hob-spin, but from Reedy and even Marvin said in his presser a week ago (I think) that other coaches were looking to get Binns into game action.

Again, just going by what's been said. Not that it adds up to much.

I would also like to say that I hated the Akili Smith pick before it was ever made. Terrible decision...turned out that I was right, unfortunately.

Same goes for Warrick. They drafted him to be a #1 WR. His best role would have been as a slot WR on a team with a true #1. He was shifty, but never very fast. Would have been better served as a slot guy.

I'd rather have Binns because I feel like I have a pretty good handle on what Tate can give you (i.e. an erratic, unreliable returner and a lousy WR). Binns we really dont know. He could be good...then again he could be more useless than tate

I would very much enjoy seeing Tate get a pink slip..... He had a few great moments last year, but overall I thought he didn't contribute enough to warrant the roster spot. Unless the guy is a one of a kind returner, I don't think a roster spot should be taken by a guy that only returns kicks.

Agreed. You need to be a game changer to take up a roster spot to only be a returner.

Too many other guys can at least be "average" and play other positions of need.

Hell, I think Brian Leonard could be a decent punt and kick returner with his hands, and natural athetic ability. He is good at making guys miss in the open field and pretty shifty, plus he is built a little bigger than most punt returners which I think would make him more durable. Maybe.

But I agree, unless you are Devin Hester, you should not be occupying a roster spot for punt returning only.
