He's only going an inning. If they follow their past patterns, they'll bring in Mengden for the 2nd inning and beyond.

And it looks like Mengden's not on the roster, which I can't understand, unless he's hurt. He threw 4 2/3 innings of 1 hit ball at the Yanks last month.

As expected, Edwin Jackson is the lone starting pitcher on Oakland's roster for Wednesday's Wild Card game.

Liam Hendriks is slated to start for the A's tonight. Also available one of the pen will be Ryan Buchter, Jeurys Familia, Shawn Kelley, Emilio Pagan, Yusmeiro Petit, Fernando Rodney, Blake Treinen, Lou Trivino and J.B. Wendleken. Jackson probably will be reserved for extra innings.

The Yankees will have Lance Lynn, J.A. Happ and Masahiro Tanaka all available in relief of Luis Severino in Wednesday's Wild Card.

Unlike the A's, the Yankees wanted most of their rotation available in this one. They'll carry 10 pitchers in all, with Dellin Betances, Zach Britton, Aroldis Chapman, Chad Green, Jonathan Holder and David Robertson also available. There were no real surprises on the offensive side of the ledger. Greg Bird was excluded after turning into a non-factor in September. Kyle Higashioka will be available as a third catcher.

This exact line-up has only been started 4 times so far, and they've averaged 7.5 runs per game.

The o/u number is 8.5.

Looks like a gift from the gambling gods to me.

It is, until they score 8 runs and Severino pitches a shutout

Very odd. Mengden shut them down on 9/4, and it was Rodney and Pagan who they knocked around in the late innings to eventually win the game.

Both managers already have me scratching my head with their decision making and we haven't even gotten to first pitch.

LOL

That would just be the way, wouldn't it.

It's probably exactly what will happen.

Actually, since I bet on the Yanks and the over, it will be the A's who score 8 runs and toss a combined 8-pitcher shutout

I was listening to WFAN yesterday when Boone's presser happened. First question was no surprise, but when he said "Severino" you could hear a collective sprint for the phone booths (which actually sounded more like a hundred cell phones being taken out and set to "Tweet")

In an elimination game, you start you best pitcher.....no???

That said, I would have started Happ.

Depends. Is he coming in on a commercial flight or flying his own plane?

Clearly should have been Happ
In a one-game playoff against Oakland, starting a lefty against them would be unwise unless it was a lefty with really dominant stuff, which Happ does not possess.

2 different strategies yanks using starters As using pen cubs/rockies did same thing If cubs had won they would have had to use their 5th starter for game 1

If Severino struggles at all early, then it's a bullpen game for both sides. I think he's probably been told to just air it out. Even if he's pitching OK, I think he doesn't see the 5th, unless he's just flat dominating.
