In 96, Jordan won MVP and Pippen finished 5th.

How many times in history have 2 teammates finished top 5?

I found your question very interesting so I looked some stuff up. It's happened before.

81-82: Bird was 2nd & Parish was 4th

82-83: Moses Malone was MVP and Dr. J was 5th

83-84: Magic was 3rd and KAJ was 4th

84-85: Magic was 2nd and KAJ was 4th

85-86: Magic was 3rd and KAJ was 5th

86-87: Bird was 3rd and McHale was 4th

01-02: Shaq was 1st and Kobe was 5th

02-03: Kobe was 3rd and Shaq was 5th

15-16: Westbrook was 4th and KD was 5th

Are you really claiming now that Jordan piggybacked on scottie pippen and Dirk piggybacked on caron butler? Lol what a goof

I think what he's saying is MJ had a HOFer in Pipen as his # 1 sidekick. And with the 2nd 3-peat the Bulls got rebounding mahcine & HOF Rodman.

MJ didn't piggyback off of anyone. But just like every champion before him and since no great player wins a title all by himself.

As far as Dirk. Without the supporting cast of Kidd, Butler, Terry & Chandler the Mavs don't beat the Heat. So it's another example of a great player needing some help to win it all.

On him being a superstar?
Yes. He didn't, and couldn't, carry a team by himself. MVP votes are nice but I don't feel they automatically confer superstar status.

Kyrie was the biggest issue and it isn't even close. He is a locker room cancer. I've played with his type and most likely his teammates carried a ton of resentment for him.

Dallas had better hope he can keep his mouth shut, and play well off-ball. If he acts like a spoiled insane person again it will implode their title hopes.

Jordan piggybacked on Pippen in the same way LeBron piggybacked on Wade.

The best player on the team isn’t the one piggybacking.

It is abundantly clear who the best player on the Heat was.
I always looked at it based on who went to who

Jason Kidd, Caron Butler Shawn Marion and Jason Terry had nothing to do with it?
To be fair those are not "stars" (Kidd was a CP3 style old dude).

All championships are team wins, but Dirk and Hakeem did it as the only big stars on the team

Oh my bad. I took you at face value when you used the term “piggyback”. These guys were all alphas in place and these pieces came later. They didn’t beg out and force a move off of their team. I should know better. Assume goalposts will be moved when convenient - check.
You've been extra pissy ever since the NFL conference finals...too much stress about the Bowl I guess.

So…

By that definition LeBron piggybacked Kyrie?

Even though he was their first.

And even though Kyrie, who is a superlative player, may not have anybody willing to sign him to a 4 year extension because he is such a terrible head case?

That the guy we are talking about?

And AD definitely followed LeBron there.

Eh since the Cavs never had won anything I really wouldn't look at it that way. Now Lebron going to the Heat?

I think that is fair by your definition.

I also don’t think it is fair that some people expected him to rot in Cleveland his whole career just because that is where he was drafted.

MJ didn’t have to demand a trade. His FO delivered a dynasty caliber supporting cast with a superstar running mate.

Kobe didn’t have to demand a trade (although he kind of did) because he played for the Lakers and had multiple HOF teammates.

Not an apples to apples thing.

Some people just get triggered when athletes have any agency at all. I know that isn’t you, but probably at least 1 or 2 people in this convo.

He absolutely did, before he was even drafted. Told the Hornets he wouldn't sign with them if they selected him, because he "deserved" to go to a team like the Lakers.

Elway did the same thing basically, he had the baseball option though

this is my order of whom i am blaming

1. Harden- only first because of injuries, and he was the first to be traded... so him leaving did break it up... in his defense though, it was only injury that stopped him from playing... and his drama is more selfish play, but he wants to play....

2. Irving- the true cancer... he let his politics get in the way of his on the court play... the anti-semitism, and the covid beliefs that cost him games just created too much drama... If it wasnt for the fact that the 2021 playoffs was the Nets' to win, he would be number one...

3. Ben simmons- Harden leaves, Simmons comes in... but doesnt play a game?? thats just awful... the nets had a chance

-------

Nobody else...

KD- sure he was the super-team super player that was the reason the others came to play... but he did his job and he wasnt the drama....

coaching- again, dont really blame the coaching... Great players should win games no matter who the coach is...

FO- this is the last people to blame here... honestly, what did they do wrong?? they had an opportunity to bring a super-team to brooklyn... they succeeded on the players... They got rid of the cancers when they had too... they probably should have punished Irving more... but really not much at fault... the execution is not always the people at tops fault... sure, there were questions on whether the big three could play together, but what kind of crappy FO would not have given this 3 a chance to play together??

Big flex going on here everybody. Not sure if you are aware everybody, but apparently basketball games are played with each team putting 5 members on the court at a time. Additionally, they have reserves who sit on the bench and can be used to “substitute” for the starting players throughout the course of the game.

This is why I keep coming back…the hard hitting sports knowledge that’s always on display.

lol

Looks like someone is having trouble with being wrong.

You trying to prop up Caron Butler as some kind of superstar that Dirk piggy-backed off of???
Shaking My Head Reaction GIF by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Who said he was a star? He was a very good player and part of why they won.

I notice you ignored Hall of Famer Jason Kidd.
