I found myself at a u11 rep minor hockey game Saturday. My son had just line’d a game that ended and his buddies were working the next game. One of them asked my son to stay to record the special pregame ceremony they were going to have to hono(u)r the people of Ukraine.
They were doing it because the starting goalie for one team had grandparents stuck in Kyiv. The national anthem of Ukraine was played and the kids from both teams made a circle around centre. The kids family was in the stands and they were openly weeping. So sad yet such a powerful scene. Got me choked up.
We decided to stay for a bit to watch and the intensity of the game was amazing. Kids brought it.
We organized a year end jamboree/tournament for our u15 teams that ended Saturday. It was a fun year ender for everyone to get back and play against kids they played with on teams in previous years. Friends reunion for the kids basically.
We decided to do the old atom post game relay shootout contest (for those far removed from the game … its 5 pucks on the blue lines and the kids are all at the bench, whistle blows and first kid races out and takes their shootout shot, they miss and they have to retrieve that puck (which the opposing goalie will sometimes fire into the corner) and pass it to their teammate coming off the bench and that next kid races in for his shot … first team to score 5 shootout goals wins a flat of gatorade lol)
Anyways, i was doing music for a game. I use a hockey playlist on amazon prime and usually i dont script it. For stoppages and intermissions its just next song … press play … then press stop when play resumes
Much to my (and many dads in the stands) joy … when i hit play just as they were setting up for the shootout contest after the game … iron maiden … run to the hills … was perfect for the moment lol
dont think many of the kids on the ice appreciated it … but the dads …
