Peterson, tougher competition, fresh off destroying his knee, terrible QB giving him the ball. Everyone knew he was going to run and he still produced. Big time
The Ravens QBs in 2003 were Kyle Boller and Anthony Wright. Teams were playing with 11 men in the box against Lewis. If people forget who Boller was:

It's easy to go homer pick but OJ has to take my vote. 1. It was two less games (fewest attempts out of all of them) 2. They had no passing offense that year (<1,000 yds pass) 3. Defenses in the day were geared to stop the run and 4. his season was such an outlier to anyone previous (outside of JB's 1,800 season in '63 (?), there was no other above 1,600 yds). His season broke the mold.
I will argue for Barry Sanders using your same points.
1) Barry may have had 2 more games, but Barry had only 2 more carries.
2) Scott Mitchell wasn't a horrible QB. Lions had a little bit of a passing game, but Lions had a horrible offensive line to block for Barry.
3) Barry was stopped on a lot of plays. In fact, he ran backwards and had 15+ yards for loss quite often. His OL was so awful, even weak DLs were breaking the line. Yet, Barry still gained 2,053 more yards than he lost.
4) Barry wasn't the first to do it, so I can't argue against it
