Great breakdown, but as dredinis stated, Posey has the 3 rings to go along with his other accolades. He also has taken the title of "Captain" from Jeter.

I agree that some (myself certainly included) have jumped the gun on ordering the marble block for the sculptor of his bust, but he really would need to falter quite badly from here on out to not be AT LEAST a strong fringe candidate. Mauer has achieved this level of falter-age.

I don't think WS rings mean much (Jack Morris) and I think the Captain thing is a bit overstated. I'm an AL guy and most of us don't think about Posey much at all. Trout is the face of baseball.

I think Posey is certainly on a HOF path and will probably get in - I think Mauer still might get in - but he does need more seasons. That's all.

Mauer needs more PRODUCTIVE seasons, not just more seasons. And his past two seasons have been quite bad AND he is no longer a catcher. It is an absolute uphill climb for him.

As for rings, tell Jeter and Berra that rings don't mean much. Without the rings, neither would be close to the stature they inhabit today.

But neither of them are in(or will be in) the HOF because of their rings... they deserved it on the field

And I am not saying Posey belongs in BECAUSE of the rings. But the rings are part of the overall picture.

At the same point in his career, Mauer was a better bat than Posey. But Posey has the rings and the D.

I will agree that championships create legends... and sure can overhype a player...

He's not bringing up rings in order to get Scott fucking Brosius into the Hall. He's talking about a guy who already has a nice trophy case of accolades tied to his name while leading a team who hadn't won in SF to 3 WS Championships. For those of us that watch Posey often, if not daily, trust us when we say that EVERY team would give their respective left nuts to have him manning your pitching staff and batting cleanup. If anything, he is UNDERHYPED.

But if you want people to value the postseason more highly doesn't that also potentially create a problem given that Posey has hit just .245/.319/.324 in the postseason and .230/.288/.328 in the World Series?

Valid point. I don't want people to value post season more, per se, but in the regular season he has been a beast and he has been the cleanup hitter and leader of the pitching staff on 3 WS teams. His hitting has been less then stellar in the postseason but IMO it doesn't diminish his ROLE on the team. He could go to 3 more WS and I guarantee you he's in the lineup every game, even if his career postseason BA stays at .230, he means that much to this team.

You're kind of playing both sides of the fence there though. You're talking about his regular season performance but then in the same sentence you call his teams "WS teams" rather than "playoff qualifiers". Hell Joe Mauer has led three Twins teams to the playoffs with his regular season greatness too, and with one more division winner even.

Would you not agree that winning 3 WS championships is a significant accomplishment in a baseball player's career? His regular season chops show he is the best offensive catcher in the game today and his defense is second only to Molina. During that time, he has also led the Giants to 3 WS. The WS teams are def a feather in the cap. I'm not stating either/or, I'm putting together the puzzle using all the pieces, not just regular season, not just post season. I don't feel that's playing both sides of the fence.

And for the record, I was not the one comparing him to Mauer. Mauer had a shitty fall from grace, where he is now no longer a C. Prior to this fall from grace, Mauer was one of the more impressive C I had seen in my lifetime considering both sides of the ball.

Posey, IMO, is headed to the HOF if he can string a few more seasons similar to what he has put up over the last 5+ seasons based on how good he is compared to his contemporaries in a similar fashion to what Mauer did prior to sucking and changing positions.
