I feel that this year will be his last in a Giants uniform. It's sad, but I don't think the team will want to commit much money to him at this point, and if Timmy has a half-decent season, he will probably ask for more money than we are willing to pay.

Well we are already paying him 21M, I can't imagine he would get that. That said if we can find another option, I'd consider it.

I don't know what went wrong but he doesn't even look remotely close to the same pitcher of old.

I don't know which would be worse - us overpaying him or the Dodgers overpaying him.

I think the giants give him a QO, which I would think would be worth about 14.5M this year. I then think they would be willing to go 2/32 or something like that, but not much more than that, regardless of the season he has. We have 3 or 4 guys who will be ready to be MLB 4/5 type of guys next year, and another 2 or 3 guys who could be 2/3 guys by '15.

Also, if we have an open rotation spot open for '14, don't you think every FA pitcher would be knocking down our door to get that spot?

Timmeh is done with us.

Timmy replaced Barry as my favorite player after Barry left, so as much as it kills me, ive already started to prepare myself to see him leave.

that said, i do remember Sabean did say they made their moves this year with Timmy in mind for next year.

That does not mean that they planned on him being here, though. They may have made their moves keeping in mind at Timmeh would NOT be here...

This would be a prime spot for FA's. But where do we go a veteran or younger guy? Also interested in which guys would be ready to start next season

I'd like to see Lincecum in Giants uniform for many reasons. I grew up in Seattle and was living there when Timmy was pitching for UW. He brings an cool energy that will be hard to replace. Also, he just flat out fits with SF culture.

That being said, 21M is insanity for a guy that now has trouble locating an 88 mph fast ball. It just doesn't compute...

Would Timmy really ask for more money if he has a good season? I don't actually think that would be the case considering he's not in to long time pressure contracts.

He didn't want a long term contract with us, but I think that was because of one of two things, or both: (1) He figured he'd get a bigger multi-year deal if he waited for free agency; and/or (2) he really wants to go some place else (maybe Seattle?).

But again, to address your point (1), why would you assume money is the motivator when everything he's said recently suggests otherwise? And (2), assuming he wants to go somewhere else, I think that's a non-issue at this point. Checking himself out of a winning culture after 2 titles doesn't even make any sense when the Giants are giving him plenty of rope to sort it out.

The big downside of going FA for this, IMHO, is that you are forced to pay market or above market price for a player. If other teams think a FA is being offered a bargain price, they will bid up the price until he is no longer a bargain. And there are some very deep-pocketed teams out there, as we all know.

All else being equal, we should have a bias toward giving the job to one of our prospects. We seem to have a pretty good system for finding and developing them. I suspect someone will be ready when the time comes. And a year is along time.

You guys have both made some good points. I know this sounds like a tautology, but I think the only way that Timmay remains a Giant beyond this season is if he WANTS to be a Giant. If he has a great year and it's all about money, he'll be gone. Timmays a very cerebral guy, so if he has a bad year and doesn't want to rehash bad memories again and is looking for a fresh start, he'll be gone. Either way or anything inbetween, Timmay must WANT to stay a Giant to be hear next year. He'll find somebody else who will pay him more and he'll find some other location that may be more comfortable (Seattle, even the Whales Vagine possibly). In my opinion too, no matter how Timmay is feeling/leaning "right now", things could drastically change in the next 6 months.

I think this is what will be the major factor influencing Timmay's decision but I also think it may be much more complicated then it appears. IMHO for Timmay to WANT to stay a Giant he will HAVE to fell that he is WANTED. Here in lies the core of the decision. What will make Timmay feel that he is wanted? Not an easy question. Will he feel he is wanted if we remove him from the SP role again? Will he fell wanted if we offer him market value for a #4-5 pitcher (hopefully) when if fact he is being paid as a premier #1? Timmay's image of himself will dictate what he feels being WANTED really is. This is also further complicated because Timmay's is not a Zeets in the twilight of his career. This is a young pitcher who happens to be struggling over the course of the past two years ... but was STELLAR prior to whatever is happening now.

A legit pro weighs in (I like this guy's stuff anyway). Sobering. But also more grist for my mill re: Timmy needing to go full Eckerlsey/Smoltz.

What's Wrong With Tim Lincecum? - The Triangle Blog - Grantland

Also the postgame chat today assumed Posey would sit tomorrow, because he's in a mini slump, and also oh look at that, Timmy's pitching.
