What's the big deal about Broncos trying to recoup money from Von?

I know it was signing bonus money, but you screwed up dude, and now you have to pay for it.

Is this gonna be one of those things that leads him to walk after next year? Opinions?....

I think they'll get it straightened out. It would be a major mistake for either party to turn this into something that's bigger than it needs to be. As it is, the Broncos are going to want to layer in a ton of language in his next contract about suspensions and off-field behavior. Also read somewhere that the Broncos don't have much choice because this is how the NFL wants these issues treated? Not sure if that's true or not. I think a great olive branch would be to offer Von the bonus money back over time if he stays on the straight and narrow.

One thing everyone can agree on is that we need to see Von Miller in a Broncos uniform for many, many more years to come! Go Broncos!

From what I understand the Broncos have no choice in the matter as the NFL is making them go after the money. The new CBA agreement states that if a player is suspended because of drug use the NFL team is to not only get the paychecks agreed upon during those games but also the bonus money paid out for that year.

Honestly with how the Broncos backed him during his appeal he kind of owes them a little. They stuck by him so I would hope he would see that and realize this is more the NFL forcing their hand than them actually wanting to do this. I will say this whole situation could end up being a blessing or a major curse. It could be a blessing in they have some major bargaining ability since him messing up again means a year long suspension so it should help keep down some of the next contract that he would have gotten but say the Broncos do decide to keep him it could turn into a curse say he does mess up again.

If nothing else the Broncos have him under contract this year and the next then could option for the 5th year of the contract them franchise him twice to make sure not to get locked into a long term contract with him in case he does screw up.

I think he should have to pay back some money. A portion of his contract is not him sitting on his but because he made a mistake.

If it does affect him staying we may not want him. His talent is huge but if he thinks he should be paid for his own idiocy then I say pass.

As it stands right now if he were to get in trouble one more time he is done for an entire season. Think of it as incentive to not screw up anymore.

I don't disagree with others in principle about holding Von Miller accountable for his actions like anyone else. However, I'm of the strong opinion that when looking back on his career in a decade or so from now, he will go down as one of the greatest defensive players in the league ever. I would prefer for those evaluations and stats to be referring to him as a Denver Broncos linebacker!

Go Broncos!

From my understanding, the repayment of bonus money is automatic as per the CBA. The Broncos are not "trying" to get him to pay money back. The fight will be between the players and the league not the player and the team.

Tough to lose $1.25 million but Von has to understand he made the mistake, not the Broncos. I think it will all be fine, just a tough pill to swallow.

I didn't realize that this payback was mandatory under the new rules of the CBA. It's alot of money, but if Von cleans up his act then he's got the potential to make 100 times that over his career.

Speaking of which, I wonder if we'll ever find out what REALLY happened. Hard to keep straight with all the stories and rumors that swirled around.

Sounds like the final story was that he was asked before a practice to pee in a cup...After doing so he then dropped it before he was able to get it sealed and since he couldn't pee anymore they told him to come back after practice and do it again...At that point the sample he produced was diluted which in the NFL's eyes is a positive sample...Since he had dropped the first sample then had a diluted sample the NFL was none too happy and decided that he was trying to cover something up so instead of just getting the 4 game suspension he got 6. At least that seemed to be the story that got the most support for being true and fits with why he would get 6 games instead of 4.

Yeah, that's the last official story, but doesn't explain what REALLY happened.

1) Did he drop his initial sample on accident or "accidentally on purpose"?

2) Did he really dilute the follow-up sample, or was it that it just tested out as diluted?

3) And assuming he's hiding something, what was it?

Last time I give him the benefit of the doubt. The second he exclaimed "I Feel I'll be exonerated" I should have known he was guilty of something. That's the line that seems to always preceed guilt in the sports world these days :L

Seems to be a pretty harsh punishment for something they don't have any ironclad proof of. Why didn't they give him till' the next day to give another sample? Of course his sample after practice may appear to be "diluted". Players drink tons of water during practice as does any other athlete.

Well and that is what the NFL had to try and figure out. It sounds like the person taking the sample from him thought he did it on purpose. Then when the next sample came in diluted it probably raised a few more red flags for that person. Obviously we will never know exactly why he dropped it or if there was anything in there. What is done is done I guess. Just have to hope that in this six weeks he doesn't get depressed and decide to do something stupid and then be gone for the rest of the year. The Bronco defense played well without him but I would rather have him available than depend upon the defense we have right now. I think we can still win the Superbowl without him but it just becomes that much harder.

I do like though when players feel like they have to win back favor from the coaches, team, and fans. They do seem to play harder in those moments so maybe he will play inspired football when he returns. I'm just excited to see him and Phillips getting after the quarterback together. If Phillips can do all he did this past week without Von imagine what he can do with Von.
